Charleston Peak via Carpentar Canyon with Branch

No location was chosen

This is a car camp and ascent of Charleston Peak. The route follows Peak Springs and is one of the most scenic routes to the peak. It is also the toughest route to Charleston Peak with 5,000+ feet of elevation gain.
Meeting location: Meeting at Wal-Mart 5200 Fort Apache between Trop and Russell.
The Plan:
Leave Vegas 4 pm. Get to the camp site (primitive) around 6 pm. Set up camp and relax.
Sunday Morning: Get up early and be ready to hike no later than 7 am, hopefully earlier.
Get back to camp in the late afternoon and drive back to Vegas.
We need 4WD vehicles for this trip.
If we don't have enough 4WB vehicles, some people will not be able to go.
All hikers must be approved to go on this hike.

What to bring:
Tent -- rain fly -- sleep bag -- thermal rest -- food (one dinner - one breakfast - food for the hike) --- stove -- water for cooking and hiking -- warm clothes to sleep in -- sunscreen -- hiking clothes -- camp shoes or tevas -- rain gear for the hike.

The Stats:
Hike: Charleston Peak through Carpenter Canyon - up and back
Distance: 10 miles
Elevation gain: 5,016 feet
Elevation peak: 11,918 feet
Time: 8 to 10 hours
Difficulty: 5
Class: 3

Slide Show

This is a car camp. You will not need to carry your tent, sleep bag etc. Make is easy and bring additional items. You can leave items in the car or at the camp ground.
Email me with questions.
No guests, period. You must chip in for gas.
If I have not hiked with you, I will contact you. If anyone can't complete the hike, they will have to wait. We are not ending a hike, because someone is not in shape.

Are cars safe in this meeting location? There have been a lot of break-ins in this area the last few months.

The break-ins I thought were across the road at the Black Velvet parking area. Do you have a better meeting location?

I know of about a dozen break-ins at Black Velvet and I heard of 1 or 2 at this lot. Unfortunately, I really don't know of any other lots. Most mtn bikers I know have been parking in Blue Diamond by the bike shop.

What about parking at the Silverton Casino on the corner of I-15 and Blue Diamond/Pahrump Highway. All the casinos have good 24 hour security and I thought saw them building a parking structure. I don't know if it's finished yet and I don't know the parking there very well since they changed all the roads there about a year ago, but we could park on the South side by The Bass Pro Shop which has access to the casino, so should have security too?

I just called The Silverton Casino and was told that the car park building is open and has five floors, the top one not being shaded.
Why don't we meet on the fourth floor, away from the lifts where we will be more likely to find a few spots together and stand around in the shade and look like hikers while every one shows up?

My buddy Jeff would still like to go if another spot opens up, but he works tomorrow and so would have to pack tonight, so if anyone is not sure if they can go, he would appreciate it if he could find out tonight so he would have a chance to pack. If he can't go he will probably be doing a three peak hike on Sunday (Mummy, Chaz & Griffith) if anyone is interested.

Silverton is a mess due to traffic and construction on SR160.

This trip is what hiking is all about. A great route that was very challenging, extremely scenic, great people (and the whole group was strong), lots of different types of hiking (boulder hopping, bushwhacking, small climbs, steep scree, creek crossing) and plenty of sweat, blood and blisters! Very well planned and executed!

It all started at 7-11 for Free slurpees..... then we went camping at carpenter canyon that was a great night. In the am we woke up first had something to eat and off we went on a 9 1/2 hour hiking expedition... Challenging of Course but Hey that what we're here for to get challenged right.... Just have to be more careful about the rocks coming off the mountain cuz those suckers, once they hit you'r 86 off the map.... Other then It's was SWEEEET...... Until next time an even better experience... Cheers Chef

My first time to summit Charleston Peak & of course I have to choose the most difficult route to do it. At least 80% of this hike is without a designated trail, it's bush-wacking, rock scrambling up along-side a creek with occasional slippery mossy sections, topped by a 200ft scree slope. Also very steep, 2800ft elevation gain in approx. 1 and 1/4 mile (without a trial). It was worth it though. Thanks Branch for showing us the bush-wacking route.
