Griffith Peak Via South Loop Trail

This location is shown only to members

Hike: Griffith Peak (South Loop Trail)- up and back
Trailhead: Cathedral Rock Picnic Area- marked
Distance: 9.5 miles- roundtrip
Elevation Gain: 3,470 feet
Elevation Peak: 11,056 feet
Time: 7-8 hours (including the drive to and from our meeting place)
Difficulty: Extremely strenuous (3 hours uphill at high elevation)
Pace: Moderate
Danger Level: Low

Griffith Peak offers one of the best views in the Mt. Charleston area. We'll hike South Loop Trail toward Charleston Peak from the Cathedral Rock picnic area. After meandering up a series of steep switchbacks through a thick forest of ponderosa pine, white fir and aspen, we'll eventually veer off South Loop Trail toward Griffith Peak. Those who endure to the end will be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama from the summit.

We'll meet at the Starbuck's on Farm Road near the intersection of 95 and Durango at 9:00 a.m. From there, we'll organize carpools for the 30 minute drive to our trail-head. A $5.00 donation to your driver to help cover gas would be greatly appreciated. It should be twenty degrees cooler in the Mt. Charleston area than in the Las Vegas valley. Be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, snacks and 3 liters of water.

Come join us for a beautiful and challenging hike!

this will be a 6 hour hike and away from food for 8 hours....people should bring ~600 calories worth of snacks/lunch to keep energy up. fuel is as important on these long hard hikes as hydraton. I am personally going to take a gallon of water and about 600 calories in food

Does this hike require long pants or are shorts ok?

Shorts are fine on this hike. The temperature should be in the 80's.

There is a small chance of rain today in the Mt. Charleston area! Be sure to pack a waterproof jacket or poncho.

It's hard to keep everyone together on these "vertical" hikes but I think we all had a great time nonetheless. The weather turned out nice and the view from the summit of Griffith Peak was the best I've seen in the Mt. Charleston area.

For me it was about reaching the top. Even though I didn't set any records. I did it and feel fantastic about that. I will definately be hiking more which will greatly improve my speed.

Bill and Sue, I did have a great time. I also made it to the top and the views from Griffin Peak were amazing. It took about 3.5 hours for me to get to the top with some of the breaks I took. I found out there were 41 switchbacks altogether. I would do this again.
