Starbucks @ 95/N. Durango (map)
OK, Folks ! I didn't lead easier hike for long time but here it comes !!
Last year, I lead 'Fletcher Canyon to Raintree' hike, but it was bit harder for beginner hikers. So, I'll make it bit easier this year.
We hike up Trail Canyon and hike down Fletcher Canyon. So, total elevation gain and distance is only half of last year. Its only 1,600 ft elevation gain and 6 miles distance hike. It doesn't sounds like my hike, but some part (1.6 miles) of this hike is off trail as usual. Lots of rock hopping and some class 2 and couple spots of easy class 3.
I recommend this hike for intermediate/beginner hikers.
Bring lots of water, snacks, cap/hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Since its monsoon season, you must bring rain gear(poncho) even its sunny. Rain doesn't kill people but cold temperature kills you.
Some part of Fletcher canyon will have water. It is not deep and we won't walk in it. But, we may across the creek several times, so waterproof boots works better.
Trekking pole may helps you if you have it.
We will hike moderate/slow pace and pause occasionally as a group to rest and to let everyone catch up.
Its about 6 miles and takes 3 - 4 hours.
Let's meet at Starbuck's at 8:30AM. We'll leave few cars at Fletcher Canyon Trail head (Thats our trail end).
Then drive up to Trail Canyon Trail head. (Thats our trail head)
Plan to carpool and riders should chip in $5-$6 for gas.
Stats:
Hike: Fletcher Canyon Top Down - open loop
Trailhead: Trail Canyon Trail head - marked
Distance: 6 miles
Elevation gain: about 1,600 feet
Elevation Peak: 9,300 feet (Trail Canyon - North Loop trail junction)
Time: 3 - 4 hours
Hiking Level: 3 (Intermediate)
Scrambling Class: 2 (Hands occasionally used for balance)
Only very strong kids are OK, but no dogs please.

Is anyone can help me as sweeper (take care of the rear) ?
I won't take care more than 25 hikers at once for safety reasons. But I can take care of 40 hikers if someone take care of the rear. Anyway, to be a sweeper, you must be experienced hiker. Because most of newbie hikers are hiking at rear and they have potential of get lost or get hurt. So, they need your help. Also, sweeper has to find the right route if slower hikers couldn't keep up group pace. Anyway, sweeper carry my walkie talkie.
Gary is the Sweeper and I opened up extra spots. Thanks Gary!!
But, I thought dead deer was better than dead hiker....LOL...
Fletcher Canyon weather forcast is http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=36.270850207...![]()
We hiked to Cockscomb peak under little rain. Actually it was light shower. only few people used the poncho/jacket. It won't cold but it will work for light shower. Sometimes poncho is overkill, but you MUST bring poncho or NO hike.
We found THAT dead deer's (fond last year) bones at the site. Gladly no more nasty smells....
Thanks Skin and Gary for looking out for us more... cautious hikers. That was a alot of fun.
