Sunrise Mtn.

Albertsons (map)

Selected By: Shin

The weather forcast says it getting bit chilly on this weekend, so I have decided to go hiking lower elevation.
Sunrise Mtn. is one of the most Lowest peak around the Las Vegas. The Peak elevation is almost as same as Lone Mtn. Peak. But, since its located on the east end of the town, the trail head is way lower and it makes this hike much harder than Lone Mtn. hike.

Even though Sunrise mtn. is over 3 miles far from Frenchman Mtn. many people in the Las Vegas area refer to Frenchman Mtn. as Sunrise Mountain since the sun rises from behind it.
Frenchman Mtn. is the highest Peak that is on the South of Lake Mead Blvd. and there are antenna tower on the top.
Sunrise Mtn. is the lower peak on the North of Lake Mead Blvd. It stand on the east side of Nellis AFB.

The hike starts same trail head as Frenchman Mtn. but goes opposite way.
There is no trail to the Sunrise Mtn. We hike on the dry wash, scree slope and rugged ridge line to the peak.
Its a short, but fun scrambling hike.
You can see Lake Mead, Nellis AFB, Las Vegas City, Red Rock Canyon, Mt.Charleston and Sheep Range from the peak.

On the way down. I take defferent way to make a loop. Actually, this descent route is safer than the ascent route.

Most of the scramble part is class 2 and few class 3. This hike is good for intermediate class hiker.

Bring lots of water, food/snacks, cap/hat, sunglass, sunscreen, rain gear, light Jacket and gloves.

Let's meet at Albertson's Parking Lot @ South East corner of Hollywood & Lake Mead Blvd. at 10:00AM.

No Kids, No Dogs, No newbies please!
If you want to bring a guest, please let me know your guests hiking ability or I won't allow them. (for their safety is the reason)

Stats:
Hike: Sunrise Mtn. Peak - closed loop
Trailhead: Frenchman Mtn. Trailhead on East Lake Mead Blvd.
Distance: 5.5 miles
Elevation gain: 1,800 feet
Elevation peak: 3,364 feet
Time: 5 hours
Difficulty: 2

Please warn anyone who drives to the trailhead to remove ALL valuables from their vehicle(s) prior to leaving home. A Mountaineers Club (meetup) member had an '06 Honda broken into, vandalized, and the windshield smashed while parked the dirt, adjacent to Lake Mead Blvd. This was about 2 miles east of the pass, last weekend.

It was bit chilly when we started, but not a big issue. Everyone made it to the peak with few scratches. Had so much fun. I brought new singn-in box and book to the peak.

loose rocks and lots of scrambling make for a few scratches. A great experience with a great group of people. Look forward to next one now that boots are broken in.

I think that I was not quite strong enough or experienced enough for this hike today. I shall be more careful in the future. However the folks were all friendly and patient which I appreciated. I would like to return to this hike at some time when I am more experienced and also fresher.
