Fear Factor: Medium if you're afraid of heights

Grand Staircase is a steep, but relatively safe, 1100 foot climb up the sandstone face of the Calico Hills overlooking Red Spring Picnic Area in Calico Basin. From the top, we'll enjoy beautiful views of both Red Rock Canyon and Calico Basin. Upon reaching the summit, we'll follow the ridge-line to beyond the boardwalk area of Red Spring for an easy descent. For those who've done this hike before and would like to learn a new way down, Sue will lead you on an alternate scramble down the back-side of Calico Hills. On the alternate route you'll end up near the Calico I overlook in Red Rock Canyon. From there you'll loop around the base of the Calico Hills and back to our starting point.
Total hiking time will be 2 hours for the traditional route. For those following Sue down the backside it may take an extra 20-30 minutes and involves a little more challenge. The initial climb to the summit is very strenuous and requires the use of both hands and feet (class 3). Exposure will be minimal although serious injury is always a possibility when scrambling. It's important we stay together as a group to avoid steep drop-offs if you happen to wander off-course. You'll burn LOTS of calories on the way up so be sure to bring 2 liters of water and snacks. Gloves are helpful to help protect your hands. Several outhouses are available at the picnic area.
Come join us for a fun morning with a slight element of danger.

With such a big group, I take it rehydration will be at BJ's.
Maybe we should call ahead.
I wouldn't bring a dog unless he/she has scrambling experience.. there are some high ledges too so you'd have to be extra careful.
What an easy hike at 1.5 miles!
