Fletcher Peak Snowshoe Hiking

Most of Las Vegas hikers doesn't like snowshoeing, but some may like it.
Snowshoeing is harder than normal hiking since you have to hike with some weight (snowshoe plus snow) on your ankle. So, if you never tried snowshoeing, its quite a challange.
Good thing is we don't have to follow the trail. Actually, the trail is covered with snow and we can't follow the trail. We hike any route we want. Also, the Winter view of Mountain is very beautiful.

We are going to Fletcher Peak with Snowshoe. Yes, we are going to hike on the SNOW !!
This is not an easy hike. Its not technical, but I can say its twice harder than normal Fletcher Peak hike.

Stats:
Hike: Fletcher Peak (Snow Shoeing) - Up and Back
Trailhead: North Loop Trailhead
Distance: 5.5 miles
Elevation gain: about 2,700 feet Total
Elevation peak: 10,319 feet (Fletcher Peak)
Time: 6 to 7 hours
Difficulty: 3

To join this hike, you MUST bring following gear. Buy it, Rent it or Steal it. What ever it take.
1. Snow Shoe....You can rent it at Sports Charlet or REI
2. Ski pole or Trekking pole (with snow baskets)
3. Alpine Boots or Water proof Boots (with at least mid ankle)
4. Gloves

Also, the following gear are recommended.
1. Gaiters
2. Ski Pants
3. Beanie Hat
4. Jacket/wind breaker (yeah, its really cold up there. but don't bring too many layers. 3 - 4 layers are enough!)
5. Sunglass
6. Sun screen

Its a long day hike, please bring lots of water and snack. The water in the hydration hose may freeze if its not insulated. Bring couple of water bottles too.

We need at least 3 high clearance vhicle just in case for the trail head parking is covered with snow.
Riders must pay $5 - 6 gas money to the Driver.

You can rent snowshoes at Sports Charlet.
Its only $10 even you rent it night before the hike and return it evening.
Once I rented it early in the morning and returned it next evening, they charge only $10....They counted it 'one day'...Amazing...

I couldn't ask better snowshoe condition than today. Temperature was great. Its 54 degrees at the Peak. No winds. I hiked up and down with only 1 layer. And I believe most of hiker had 1-2 layers. Since I had already broke the trail last weekend, the trail was well packed and easy to hike. We made it to the peak in 2 hours 45 minutes. And stayed 1 hour 15 minutes at the Peak !! It was just nice at the peak and didn't want to leave. Some fast hiker hiked down in less than 1 hour and another hikers made it in 1.5 hour.

What a joyous experience to be plodding through the powdery white stuff, nestled among the bristlecones and bathed in abundant sunshine and moderate temps. Truly a winter wonderland!
