Moonlight Hike to Black Mountain

Map to Trailhead Parking Lot

This month's Moonlight Hike takes us to one of the best views of Las Vegas... Black Mountain! Of course, we won't be going all the way to the top of the mountain. The Moonlight Hike is supposed to be a social hike that most anyone can do, lead at a social pace, so we have time to converse and take in the scenery.

And what scenery we'll have!

The hike itself is fairly easy. It starts on a paved trail with a very mild incline as it passes a flood control basin. Then the trail we want breaks off to the right and heads uphill. About halfway to the top there is a large pile of boulders (also known as seats) with an incredible view of the city. We'll hang out there and enjoy the cool evening until it's time to head back. We should be back to our cars around 9 PM. Post-hike rehydration therapy is scheduled for the T-Bird Lounge on Eastern between Silverado and Serene. Be there or be square!

As with all Moonlight Hikes, this hike is kid and LEASHED-dog friendly.
As with all Moonlight Hikes, you are discouraged from using artificial lights. On the off chance there is cloud cover blocking the moonlight, you should bring a light. If possible, make it a red light.

If you want to carpool, I recommend meeting at the T-Bird parking lot at 6:00 PM. We'll leave for the Trailhead at 6:15. The T-Bird is located at 9465 S. Eastern, Las Vegas, NV, 89123. Here's a link to its location on Google Maps: http://maps.google.co...

See you on the trail!

The hike was great with the full moon! The view was impressive of the valley. I had a great time meeting other members of the hiking group. It was fun to socialize after the hike at the T-Bird Lounge. Thanks Skip for putting this event together. Unfortunately, I would have to agree with Regina that the hike was not "kid friendly" as advertised for younger children.

I mispoke in my review of the hike...it is a DAWN TO DUSK trail. Point is... NO HIKING ON BLACK MOUNTAIN AT NIGHT. Sorry everyone.

Thanks everyone for joining me on the LAST EVER Moonlight Hike on Black Mountain... it is, in fact, a dusk to dawn trail so no more night hikes up there will be posted. That said... WHAT AN AWESOME TIME! Lots of new people! Lots of fun! Great moon, weather, views, and rehydration afterwards. Thank you so much for joining me and making this a great night!

Excellent pace and had a great times. Skip did a great job keeping the group together and stopped several times to re-group, which was great... And I agree with Sarah and Shin's comment =)

Great hike SKIP. My first time on one of your hikes & 2nd Moonlight hike on Black Mountain (& 4th hike ever). Thought we had a great pace & stopped every so often for others to catch up. I myself was about 10-15 minutes late & caught up to the group & didn't think that it was that difficult of a hike or dangerous. Awesome views of the valley & great people to talk to on the way up/down. Will definitely join one of your hikes again. Rehydration therapy was great afterward.

It was great hike with good hikers. Skip did great job. He stopped many times to allow slow hikers to catch up. And we stayed on the trail that means No scramble, and it was NOT dangerous. (I think driving free way is more dangerous) I can't believe those mean senior residents who have never seen Mountain Lion tried to scare new hikers.

I thought the hike was wonderful. Thanks to all who contributed, especially Skip. I would do this again anytime. I will be giving lectures soon on full moon Fridays on esoteric subjects so I won't be able to participate on Fridays. Tbird lounge was perfect for enjoying company afterwards. Thanks again

First of all this hike is dangerous during the day let alone at night. I am angry that is was said to be kid and dog friendly as it is not at night. Setting this aside, this hike was illegal. There were signs posted and a barricade blocking the entrance. I followed the group assuming special permission was given, in fact it was NOT. When I got up so far I decided it had become too dangerous for kids and myself being handicapped. On my way out I was told by several residents that it is not a safe hike at night and there are coyotes, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes. Then at the end of the trail stood 5 very pissed off senior citizens snapping my picture. They proceeded to tell me that I was not allowed back there and I said I thought they had been given permission. They showed me the sign that is clearly posted with warnings of only dawn to dusk hiking. I am disappointed in this group, the leadership, and whoever is responsible needs to reprimanded. NO moonlight hikes EVER!
