Skip's mid-week Slaughter... Full Moon on Frenchman's Mtn.

Albertsons (map)

Selected By: SKIP

BECAUSE OF THE SERIOUS "NO SHOW" ISSUES WITH THIS GROUP, I'm allowing RSVPs 3 days before the event. By then people ought to have a clue as to whether or not they can actually fit this into their schedule. I hope you'll join me, and I'm sure most of you understand.

Distance: about 3 miles round trip
Duration: About 3 hours
Pace: 3 of 5
Difficulty: 4 of 5
Elevation: about 1800 feet over 1 1/2 miles
Scrambling: 1 of 5
Danger: 1 of 5

THIS IS A STRENUOUS HIKE!
NO KIDS!
NO DOGS!
NO WHINING!

OK, still getting back into shape afer the holidays. This should be just the ticket. Frenchman's Mtn.(inaccurately known as Sunrise) is the big tan rock that creates the Easternmost edge of the Las Vegas Valley. There's a road that takes you up to the twin peaks of this formation. It's quite steep, so a bit strenuous. It's a good workout for anyone wanting build their "climbing muscles". There's no scrambling, just a couple of miles of rather continous uphill. The road is a bit loose/slippery so be prepared to be careful with your footing or land on your butt a time or two.

Here's some more info:

It should take us about 3 hours up and back. I won't be racing up the thing, but I want to be off this rock by 9:30 so we won't be waiting much for anybody. Since it IS an up and back, if you find you can't keep up we can pick you up on the way back down.

This is on MY side of the valley, and believe me when I say there isn't a more spectacular view of Las Vegas than from the peak of Frenchman's... an amazing payoff for those who dare.

Meet me in the Albertson's parking lot on the SE corner of Lake Mead & Hollywood at 5:45PM under the big sign right there on Lake Mead Blvd. We'll leave for the Trailhead at 6:00.

Bring liquid, it will likely be cold, it may be windy, so dress in layers. Trekking poles will come in handy for those that use them, and of course some hiker's determination and a smile.

It will be DARK when we start but there will be a nearly FULL MOON so it should be spectacularly beautiful but a light is still a good idea. Maybe we can hit Timbers for a little rehydration afterwards.

See ya then,

Happy Hikers ...
  • Leave no trace. No trash, no food, no pet waste. Minimize your impact by staying on marked trails, no shortcuts or cutting switchbacks. Take nothing but photos.
  • In a group, hike single file or stick to the right half of a wide trail. Yield to faster or smaller groups. Uphill hikers should be given the right of way as they are working harder. Whenever you pause, move off to the side so there's room to pass.
  • Greet people you meet. Feel free to invite them to join our group.
  • Plan on drinking 16 oz. of water per hour. Even if you're not thirsty, you should be hydrating. You don't feel the water loss until its too late; your body is working hard!
  • Avoid cramps, fatigue and wobbles with drinks and snacks that target electrolytes and potassium (ex: Banana, Clif Shot, Gatorade, Emergen-C, etc.)
  • Even on cloudy days, the sun is damaging your skin. Sunblock is essential, hats are terrific.
  • Carpool when possible. It's good for your wallet and the environment. It's also kind to avoid maxing out the parking spaces. Tip your driver.
  • RSVP with integrity. YES means YES. You are holding a spot someone else wanted. We have a serious problem with no-shows. crying
  • The $1 for me is always optional and extremely appreciated. Hiking is free, but we spend hours researching, exploring, planning, writing, posting, and following up on events. We answer emails, phone calls, and texts. We're happy to teach you new trails and techniques, and build a community that's safe and friendly.

Moonrise is not until 10:49 PM according to http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/moonrise.html so we should be expecting to hike by starlight :)
