Stats: Distance: 6 miles round trip Elevation Gain: 500+ feet plus lots of scrambling up and down boulders. Time: 5-6 hours Difficulty: 3 out of 5. (Many beginners find this hike to be extremely strenuous). Pace: 2 out of 5 Fear Factor: Moderate for some. Hazards: Slippery rocks, snakes, tarantulas, velcro plant (can irritate your skin if touched), maybe a bare bottom or two. coolcoolcoolcoolcoolcoolcool Gold Strike Hot Springs is a popular hike in the Las Vegas area and is a favorite for many. The trail-head is located a half-mile past the Hacienda Hotel in Boulder City-- just before the Hoover Dam. We'll hike through a picturesque slot canyon with towering walls on each side while passing several hot springs and hot waterfalls. We'll eventually end up at the sparkling blue-green waters of the Colorado River. Be sure to wear a bathing suit under your hiking clothes or waterproof shorts so you can enjoy the hot springs along the way as well as the sauna cave once we reach the river. We'll also eat lunch at the river so be sure to pack something. The distance of the hike is three miles each way and requires climbing over several massive boulders. It's somewhat like an obstacle course but that's what makes it so much fun. It should take us 5 to 6 hours round trip but will depend upon how much time we spend at the hot springs and at the river. Beginners may be intimidated by some of the rocks and boulders we'll enounter but a slow, systematic pace will help ensure that everyone gets through safely. Ropes are attached in some of the more challenging places as an added measure of safety. Nonetheless, serious injury is always a possibility. The weather should be sunny and may be pushing 90 degrees toward the second half of this hike. A minimum of 3 liters of water per person is required plus a hat, sunscreen, lunch and snacks. Gloves may be helpful to avoid rope burn. Waterproof shoes are also recommended. Although our pace will be slow and steady expect to burn LOTS of calories-- especially on the way back. We'll meet at the Hacienda Hotel in Boulder City at 8:30 a.m. From Las Vegas, follow 93 south toward the Hoover Dam. A few miles before the dam you'll see the Hacienda Hotel on your left. Turn into the main entrance at the big Hacienda sign. From there, head toward the parking lot closest to the Hoover Dam. We'll organize carpools for the 3-minute drive to the trail-head. You'll find this to be a fun, beautiful and memorable hike-- and a great workout as well!

Great group today but too hot to be fun. Not a great hike when the temperature approaches the 90's. The last rope to the river was out so some of us decided not to go all the way today.

Debbie, ive done this hike quite a few times and have never seen a snake and the only time ive seen a spider was at night after dark (and it was quite nasty too). Im not saying you wont see one, but most likely the only wildlife you see will be maybe a mountain goat or a naked body LOL
