Search for Ronald Kirk

A member of our community is missing.  You may have seen news reports that Ronald Kirk's vehicle was found in Calico Basin, days after he was reported missing.  Search crews, including Metro's Search And Rescue, went out today looking for him, to no avail.  If you're available tomorrow (Wednesday) morning, please come out and aid in the effort to find Ronald.

Hikers will be meeting Metro's Ed Pierce at the end of Calico Basin Rd. at 8 AM.  Head out to Calico Basin and take the road all the way to the end, past the Red Springs parking area.  Ed Pierce will help coordinate the search.

Searchers should come prepared with regular hiking essentials, bright clothes, extra water and food, and a whistle.  Please search in groups of two or more.

I implore you to come out and help if you can.

For everyone who came out and gave their time, their knowledge and were just willing to do so much to help a stranger, thank you. It would be great if the results were better, but it means a lot to friends and family that people were willing to step up. It's so easy to get caught up in the unimportant day to day trivial things, that when a real crisis hits, the good in people really shines. Know that you did a really wonderful thing today...

It was good to see so many people coming together for a good cause.

Took the plane up yesterday with three spotters. Christine, a professional photographer provided her high res camera and Rick, nine year veteran of Calico hikes, took picks that we can analyze. I will ask that they be posted so you all can help scour them for signs of Ron, however if you really want to zoom in I imagine we would need originals from Christine. If we find anything encouraging I'm ready to do another flight not to mention a hike in.

Hey Ellie I can't go but have a friend interested in going tomorrow. I gave him the information that we had from today assuming the same applies tomrrow. Did you hear anything. Again, it was nice getting hiking with you again. If I did not have a deadline to get my son, I would have been more daring and pushing through. Thanks again. Hope they find him soon.

I've had some inquiries if we will be searching tomorrow too.

For what it's worth, Ron's friend's and family appreciate this more than words can say. We know everything wasn't perfect, but we're trying to do the best we can to do as thorough a search as possible. It's wonderful so many of you were willing to give up your day to help a stranger.

    -Thank you

Scoured the red peak between sandstone drive and little springs road for 6 hours with Jack and Lori. No signs. Looked in every crevice and cave.

Just dropped off a large topo map, the parking lot is quite full and there is a police presence along with rangers parked along rt 159, considering parking down the street a bit for your sanity.

    whistles, air horns, emergency signals,
    Binoculars,
high-energy snacks (lots of requests for meaty snacks),
    GPS units,
    radios,
a BIG topo map of the immediate area to compile survey info,
lots of small maps to give to surveying teams so they can plot their surveys,

Please try to coordinate with the people organizing the effort on the ground. If everyone just searches independently, we're just going to keep going over the same areas.

some members of the LVMC will be out there searching today

Everyone please bear in mind that there were probably 15-20 people out searching all day yesterday. Common areas like gateway canyon and anything off a trail has been searched fairly thoroughly. Please coordinate with the people on the ground to make sure you are making the best use of your time and not redoubling efforts.

The area has had helicopter fly overs by search and rescue and they didn't find anything. They even used thermal imaging. I don't know if a plane would yield different results.

I'll leave for Calico in my truck by 7:30. If flying my plane over the area would help give me a call before then. [masked]-0911. Two spotters in the plane would help. Search in a plane involves circling and G forces. If we use the plane anyone flying with me as a spotter would have to be sure they are not affected by motion sickness. It would also help if there were radios on the ground calling GPS coords. I would depart from Henderson but could pick up spotters from North Las Vegas.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
