Gold Strike Canyon

One of my favorite hikes!

We will meet under the Fiesta Marquee and carpool from there. Please give your driver at least $5 for gas. We will be leaving the parking lot at 9:00 sharp. Please get there early.

There's a little bit of everything on this hike. Beautiful canyon walls, hot springs, scrambling, ropes, possibly big horn sheep and the Colorado River!

Distance: 6 miles round trip

Elevation Gain: 500+ feet plus lots of scrambling up and down boulders.

Time: 4-5 hours hours

Difficulty: 3 out of 5. (Many beginners find this hike to be extremely strenuous)

Pace: 2 out of 5

Fear Factor: Moderate for some.

Hazards: Slippery rocks, snakes, tarantulas, velcro plant (can irritate your skin if touched), maybe a bare bottom or two in the pools.

For this intermediate hike we'll be heading past the upper pools to the River and cave sauna (for intrepid coldwater swimmers) before enjoying lunch on the rocks with a great view of the river and Tillman bridge.

Very nice pools are presently found near the river, though we'll probably head back up to the upper hotsprings to lounge awhile there and rejuvenate.

Caution: Wearing hiking gear in the pools makes for a cold trip back to the cars!!

2-3 liters of water and snacks and/or a lunch. We will take a 20-30 minute break at the river.

Change of clothes or towel, if you go in the water. Otherwise you will finish the hike wet

Good water shoes, to where in the water. Boots for the hike.

No dogs, children or guests

Jennifer, This is going to be a very large group. More that I anticipated. I would prefer everyone to RSVP individually.
    Maybe another time.
    Thanks for understanding

Hi Jeff, I went on this hike with you before (I was the blond that climbed the rope at the river) and I wanted to bring my mom with me but I had not RSVP'd with a plus one. She is as good a hiker as I am, if a little bit slower. I LOVED this hike and made some great new friends. We will have room for 3 people in our car for carpooling. I'm excited for her to see this hike!

I decided to drop out to make room for someone who may not of been there yet. It's a wonderful hike that I have been doing for twenty years now. Perhaps Cathi will get in?? Enjoy!

    Hi Kate,
Water shoes are optional. At some points you will be walking in water, but only a few inches.
Water shoes are recommended only for those that want to wade in the hot springs.

Hi. Do we actually hike in the water? Would I be OK without water shoes?
