Fracture Ridge in Anthem (Henderson) shares the same trail-head as the one for Black Mountain. After 1.2 miles the trail branches off to the right toward Fracture Ridge. We'll follow a steep route most of the way with scrambling over sharp lava boulders near the summit. This will require us to use both hands and feet for the final push to the top. Exposure (the risk of falling resulting in severe injury or death) will be very minimal. However, the possibility of twisting an ankle or slipping will be high-- especially on the way down. Trekking poles may be helpful but you should be fine without them. I'm sure this is called Fracture Ridge for a reason so we'll try our best to be extra cautious. Total distance is approximately three miles each way with 1900 feet of elevation gain. The beautiful view from the summit (4800 feet) will be well worth the effort. It should take us four to five hours round trip. On a scale of 1-5 our pace will be a 2 1/2. There is no shade on this hike so be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, 3-4 liters of water and snacks. You'll burn LOTS of calories on the way up. It may be quite windy on Saturday, especially as our elevation increases, so be sure to dress accordingly. Beginners are welcome but you'll find this hike to be extremely strenuous. If you can't make it all the way to the top you should have no problem following the trail back down. Come join us for a fun morning! An intense workout is guaranteed. Don't forget to sign the guest book at the summit!
To get to the trailhead: Go south on Eastern Avenue from the 215. Keep heading south several miles until Anthem Parkway branches off to the left from Eastern Avenue. Follow Anthem Parkway until you see a Walgreen's on your right-hand side at the intersection of Anthem Parkway and Hampton. Turn left at the first street past the Walgreen's which is called Atchley Drive. There is not a street sign on the left but there should be one on the right. Atchley Drive turns into Somersworth. Follow Atchley/Somersworth a very short distance and turn left at the first street which is called Shadow Canyon Drive. Follow Shadow Canyon Drive as it curves around until you see a small parking lot on your left. There are only a few parking spaces so most of us will have to park in the street. If you miss the parking area and hit Atchley/Somersworth again you've gone a few hundred feet too far.
