River Mountain Trail (Boulder City) to Black Mountain Peak

River Mountain Trail in Boulder City to Black Mountain Peak is a great hike for a Sunday afternoon. The well-maintained trail is three miles each way with approximately 1200 feet of elevation gain. From the summit of Black Mountain (3600 feet of elevation) we'll enjoy beautiful views of Boulder City, Lake Mead and Las Vegas. Don't forget your camera!

This hike is rated moderately strenuous. Our pace will be a 2.5 on a scale of 1 to 5. It should take us an hour to reach the summit along a wide, safe trail with a steady uphill grade. There is no exposure on this hike although it is always possible to trip and fall-- especially on the way down. We'll spend about half an hour at the top to socialize and enjoy the views before our return to the trail-head.

Please check the weather forecast on the morning of the hike. There may be a cool breeze at the summit so be sure to pack a wind-proof jacket. Two liters of water, snacks, hat and sunscreen are highly recommended. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on this trail. We'll try to begin the hike by 12:15 p.m. Total hiking time will be 2.5 hours.

Depending upon the wishes of the group we'll meet afterward for food and beverages in downtown Boulder City. Come join us for a beautiful and fun afternoon and make some new friends in the process!

If you want a little bit more workout, you can do both Black Mountain and Red Mountain on the same hike. You can also view the Ziplines, in case you're wondering how they look like.

To find the trail-head type in the address for St. Jude's (address shown above) in Google maps or Mapquest. As you're heading toward the Hoover Dam on 93 South the trail-head is on your left just before St. Jude's. You'll see a large sign reading "River Mountain Trail". If you pass our parking area just turn around in St. Jude's. I hope that helps. See you Sunday!

TO GET TO THE TRAILHEAD, take US-93 through Boulder City. In the middle of town, turn left on Buchanan/US-93. The road crests a hill and bends right then slowly going down hill. The trailhead is immediately ahead on your LEFT and is MARKED. Its right before you get to the clock tower on your left. If you gone too far, just make U-turn and comes back. You can see big 'River Mountain Trail Parking' sign on your right. The trailhead is only about 1/2 mile from US-93/Buchanan.

Just in case, I will wait at Fiesta Henderson Casino under the big sign at 11:30AM for who doesn't know the trail head or wants carpool from there.

Could have been a little warmer and a little less windy but a great hike nonetheless. Sorry we couldn't join everyone afterward for food and "rehydration".
