Havasupai Falls IV

Havasupai Falls (map)

This is a limited RSVP event do not take spots that you do not intend on using

www.havasupaitribe.com

I made the reservations for camping on Friday and Saturday nights June 12-14th. Everyone will pay at the village as they arrive. There are no dscounts this year for groups. Our per person cost will be $75.90. This covers your Friday and Saturday night camping. Our reservation number is 582. If anyone wants to go earlier in the week to spend more time there, you must make reservations on your own for those extra days.

This is a 11 mile one-way hike that is moderately difficult. The first 2 miles are downhill with a 3000 foot elevation change. Which means on the hike out, the last 2 miles are up 3000 feet. That is the only difficult part aside from the distance. After the elevation change, we will be hiking through a winding canyon that eventually leads to the Grand Canyon. It is 9 miles from trailhead (Hualapai Hilltop) to the Supai Village then 2 more miles to the campground. The original trail from the village to the campground has been changed because of last years flooding. They said it is still easy to follow. We can decide when and who will meet at the trailhead later but keep in mind it will take about 4 hours to get to the campground. So, the earlier, the better.

WATER: There is a spring in the campground that we have used for water on three previous trips with no bad side effects. You can bring a water filter if you don't feel comfortable with the spring water.

FOOD: The village has a small store and cafe to purchase food. I have always stopped at the cafe on the way in and out to lessen my food in my pack, and to take a break during the hike. The other days you will be responsible for feeding yourself. We can always team up regarding stoves/pans if people want to arrange that separately. The store and cafe are two miles from camp. Bring everything you need to survive for the weekend in your pack.

FEES: $75.90 to camp Friday and Saturday The cost increased $25.90 from last year. (We actually got a great rate last year)

BACKPACKING: The Local Indians provide travelling services for an extra fee. You can have your pack taken in by mule/horse for $85 per 135 lbs. This requires a week's advance notice which you can make yourselves. They also deliver it from trailhead all the way to campground. The other option is to have it flown in on the helicopter for $20 but it only gets you and or your pack to the village. You can also fly yourself in and out via helicopter for $85.00per person each way. The locals have priority on the helicopter and it is first come first serve. You will have to pack the last two miles into the campground and back to the village should you choose to fly. These prices are all one way. You can choose to carry your pack in, and have them take pack it out, or pack it both ways yourself, whatever you decide is fine.

DIRECTIONS: Travel south on Route 93 for about 100 miles to Kingman, AZ. 2 miles east on I-40. 60 miles north/east on Historic Route 66 to Peach Springs, AZ. 55 miles north on Tribal Road 18 to Hualapai Hilltop. Some people camp in their cars the night before, some people stay at the hotel in Peach Springs, and some people drive from Vegas that morning. That can be decided later. Please be careful driving at night on tribal road 18 because of cattle, elk and other wildlife wondering onto the roadway.

Reservations are required and hard to come by in the this time of year. We have 65 spaces available with a lot of interest which is why I'm not including Maybe as a RSVP choice. If you can make it, wonderful, if not, I'm sure we'll be going again.

"PLEASE DO NOT TAKE UP AN RSVP SPACE IF YOU ARE NOT SURE YOU ARE GOING, THIS IS A VERY POPULAR EVENT AND WE NEED TO BE CONSIDERATE OF OUR FRIENDS AND FELLOW HIKERS."

If the event is full and you want to go please mention this on your RSVP and we can try to update RSVP's as things change.

The reservations are under confrimation number 582. Everyone needs to check in and pay in the village. They will give you a tag to place on your packs which authorizes you to camp.

There are no alcoholic beverages allowed in the reservation so pack your bags, bottles, and flasks accordingly. There are some dumpsters but they are often full, be prepared to pack out your own trash.

I can lead a hike to the Colorado River on Saturday. I have done the hike several times. The hike is about twice as far as Beaver Falls, which is on the way.

I managed to get another 20 spots for the group. If you are on the wait list plan your schedule accordingly with intent to go. We will have drop offs as the date approaches and I will send out reminders to make sure that if people cant make it that they drop out plenty early. Please people be considerate of others and drop out if you are not 100 % on this trip.

I am so excited that you added the extra spots because now I can go. thanks so much! This hike is at the top of my list and I've spent hours looking at photos and reading other accounts and I have tried for this hike twice and once it snowed and once it was too hot. I'm up for sharing a mule.

They were supposed to reopen on May 1st after last years flooding. I scheduled in June hopeing to avoid any delays for the reopening. If for some reason they do not reopen by the time we are supposed to go I will try to have an awesome back up event planned so keep your $75.00 ready and a very positive attitude no matter what.

Cooking gear- Most people will bring dehydrated food and use small stoves to boil water... Some people bring their own ready to eat stuff; tuna in a bag salmon things that are light and fast and easy. I do the dehydrated route.
Cars broken into- Do not leave valuables visible in your cars, lock valuables in the trunk. I have never known anyone personally who has had a problem but have heard rumors. I think good common sense and safety will prevent us from having any serious problems.

From what I've heard, they may be waiting for the helicopter as long as it takes you to hike out, so you may still arrive on top at the same time!

That is true. last year people hiked out and were waiting when we flew out. However it goes by a sign in sheet and he or she who signs in first goes first behind the locals of course. I am hiking out and may have a seat available C but am not sure of schedules or if i am heading straight back to town or hitting some tourist stuff on the way home.

we always attempt to camp in a group or small groups where we can so just look for familiar faces or a meetup sign. We are not sure how it will be this year since things have changed so much after the flood. The camp ground is about 1/2 mile long so look around for a good spot or friends. Even if we all do not wind up camping in the same spots we can meetup Friday here and there to figure out who wants to hike on Saturday and who doesn't and what time we will head for Beaver Falls and beyond.

DO NOT FORGET TO TOP OFF WITH GAS IN KINGMAN. THERE IS A GAS STATION ABOUT 10 MILES PAST THE TURNOFF TO 18 BUT IT IS EXPENSIVE. IT'S WORTH IT IF YOU ARE LOW ON GAS BUT AVOID IT IF POSSIBLE.

the devastation there is far worse than i ever expected, but beautiful new places grow more stable each day. RIP navajo falls. i loved you. the new navajo falls is a terrific jump, perhaps THE best cliffjump left, and will one day be as beautiful as navajo was if the tribe can stabilize the terrain. havasu and mooney falls were painful to see, but soon enough there will be fresh travertine and one will never know how drastically the landscape has changed. havasu is at least 20 feet shorter, and i don't see how mooney will ever be as swimmer-friendly or deep as it once was. i'll be back at least two more times this year- who's up for a return trip in august or september?

This has got to be one of the most beautiful places on the planet. I understand that it's changed a lot since the flood, but this being my first time, I saw only the beauty and not the changes. Great group of friends to camp with, breathtaking falls and scenery, and tons of fun. I also enjoyed exploring the village and talking to some of the locals. Thanks so much, Paul, for taking the time and effort to organize this, and for giving us directions from Area 51!
