Red Rock Canyon Entrance (map)
I want to burn more than a few calories before I enjoy copious amounts of little smokies and other Super Bowl snacks so I'm off to Red Rock to take on Turtle Head Peak. This is a strenuous hike about 5 miles round trip. (It's also a bit of a scouting trip for a future slaughter
)It's mostly trail, though some of the trail is a bit more bushwhacky, and maybe some easy class 2 scrambling. Up at the top is an absolutely beautiful view of both Red Rock and the Las Vegas valley. This is a genuinely tough hike for beginners. It's renowned as a good challenge for average hikers. You hard core folks will probably just want to do Charleston peak in the snow barefoot.
EXTREMELY STRONG kids OK.
NO dogs please.

We'll meet at 8:15 AM in the Parking lot by the main entrance to Red Rock NCA, carpool up and head to the trailhead at 8:30. There's a $5 entry fee into Red Rock unless you have a pass, which many of us do, making carpooling in that much more desirable. We'll do Turtle Head then on the way down I'll take us to see the pictographs in this cool outcropping.
The whole thing should take us 4 to 5 hours which should get us off the mountain in plenty of time for whatever game plans we may have. Bring plenty of water, a little sustenance, comfortable sturdy shoes, maybe some trekking poles if you've got 'em, sun protection, a bit of hiker's determination, and of course a camera.
I hope you'll join me!
