Summerlin Peak

Lets go to Summerlin Peak!
19 of us hiked up there 3 month ago and it was FUN!

Summerlin Peak is not famous peak, but you can see this peak from anywhere in Las Vegas. If you live in Summerlin Area, you can see it very clearly.
Its located on west side of 215 Freeway in between Lake Mead Blvd. and Cheyenne Ave.

There is no trail on this hike. We hike dry wash for first 1.3 miles then start climbing steep hill.
Its all class 2 scramble but very steep. 1,600 ft elevation gain in 0.7 miles.
There are no major exposure but couple of minor one.
Its about 5 miles round trip and more than total of 2,300 ft elevation gain. Its little bit harder than standard Turtlehead Peak Hike. Sorry, but this is NOT a beginner's hike.
We will hike moderate pace. But if you can't keep up with group pace or give up on the way up, I will pick you up on the way down.

Please check the Elevation Chart

Bring lots of water, food/snacks, cap/hat, sunglass, sunscreen, light jacket, rain gear(poncho) and gloves. (its cold up there)

Let's meet at Starbucks @ I-215 free way & Cheyeann Ave. at 10:00AM.
(Its NOT I-95 @ Cheyeann. We meet almost west end of Cheyeann Ave. )

No Kids, No Dogs, No Frogs, No hikers with fear of heights please!
If you want to bring a guest, please let me know your guests hiking ability or I won't allow them. (for their safety is the reason)

This weekends weather forcast is NOT good.
We may get light shower or snow.
Fortunately, Summerlin Peak is not high altitude. Peak altitude is 5,082 ft and it is bit higher than Turtle Jr and lower than La Madre Springs.
It is located North End of Red Rock/La Madre ridge, so it doesn't get many snow/rain.
Even Last weekend it didn't get much snow up there.

The weather forcast says it will be Sunny on Saturday. (They said it will be 'Rain' couple days ago...)
Anyway, it will be bit cold up there, so don't forget to bring wind breaker/Jacket. Off course poncho too.

Since Gary comes to this hike, we probably go to rehydration.
But, I'm not familiar around there. Do you have any suggestions?
    Any pizza place?

Gary ate the wrong frog, mine is just fine. I'll find another one he can eat for rehydration.

I'm going to check the trail condition tonight. I will let you know how bad/good is when I came home. But I think it will be around mid night.

OK. I just came home from mid night Summerlin Peak hike without any scratch. Took 2 hours up ,stayed half hour at the peak (it was so beautiful) and took 2 hours down.
Anyway, tomorrow....Today's hike is ON since I could make it even in the dark. But there are snow over the 4,200 ft elevation. So, we have to walk on the snow for last 1/3 of the hike. But it was only 1/4-1/2 inch and nothing serious. I will send an email to all the hikers on RSVP for more info.

The weather was PERFECT and the hikers were GREAT. Made it to the peak in 2h22m. There were some snow patch on the trail, but not an issue. We had blast !

Once Again Shin pulls it off. Hardest and Best "Hike" I have ever done. Hardest meaning Cardio wise. I can't wait for the next one.

A great workout with great people. A tough one since I have not hiked someplace steep for the last month What an awesome view from the top.

Wow! Not your average Sunday (Sat) hike! A great workout and well worth it. The view of Vegas and surrounding was phenomenal. Slipped on the scree and fell on my "pride." But, I would do it all over again (but, with thicker pants). Special thanks have to go to Shin. He went out at midnight to check the trail. So, he did this hike twice within 12 hours! He is almost mythical!

I would not have enjoyed this hike in the rain, Fortunately the weather was perfect! Great hike. Great group! Bad news, Timbers no longer has frog legs on the menu!

Hiking is stupid. Shin is a terrible hike leader, and when he paid for rehydration, he didn't thank me for allowing him to be generous. I will never go hiking again, especially with Shin.
