VegCF First Monday Vegan Potluck

Please join us the first Monday of every month for a vegan potluck! Everyone is invited! This is a GREAT way to introduce your veg-curious friends to the delights of homemade vegan cuisine. Join us with a covered vegan dish in the community room (library) of the First Unitarian Church of Orlando. There is no cost if you take a dish, but we ask for a $10 donation if you do not take a dish.

Please take a complete ingredient list (and the recipe instructions if you care to share them), and please be sure that your dish is vegan (no animal products or byproducts). If you know what you plan to make, please list it in your RSVP, so we can plan for a good variety of food.

    Hi All,
Did you leave your tupperware salad bowl and/or large green glass at tonight's potluck? If so, please reply here. I have them.

    November 4, 2013

    • Ryan

Yes! Shirlene saw that they were left behind and offered them to me! I gave one away to someone else at the potluck (I forget who) but the other two are yours, Rachael. Let me know the best way to get them to you.

      November 6, 2013

    • Rachael

If you wanted them, you can keep them (as long as they get a good home, I'm fine either way). :) Otherwise maybe you could give them to me at the next event? I think I heard something about Woodlands and I've been really wanting to try that place. Or if that's not soon enough, then we could arrange something before then.

Whoever brought the chicken salad, I know the recipe was out but I didn't get to copy it. Is it available to share here?

      1 cup tempeh, cubed

      November 6, 2013

    • Shirlene S.

Let me start over....1 cup tempeh, cubed. 1/2 cup vegennaise. 1 stalk celery, finely chopped. 1 medium dill pickle, finely chopped (I used dill weed). 1/2 medium onion. 2 tbsp minced fresh parsley. 2 tsp prepared mustard (which I didn't put in). 2 tsp Braggs (I used salt). 1 clove garlic, crushed/minced/pressed. Steam the tempeh for 15 mins. then set aside to cool. Combine vegennaise, celery, pickles, onions, parsley, mustard, braggs and garlic with the tempeh. I cut the tempeh up smaller after steaming it.

I really would like to have this potluck more often and it would be great if we could have it on another night of the week :-) Who's with me?

I'm with you! Twice a month and on a night other than Mon would be nice!

Can I bring coconut rice? I'm new to the Vegan diet and haven't tried this recipe with brown rice yet and don't want to experiment on you, so I plan on making it with white rice. If the preference is for whole grain foods, I'll bring something else instead. Also, I'm hopeful my husband will attend, but he will be late.

White or brown, coconut rice sounds good to me!

If you have any vegan or vegetarian cookbooks, animal rights books, or other veg-related topics of interest that you would like to donate to our book exchange, please bring tonight to the potluck! We'll have them available next month to check out and return at the next potluck or before!

I haven't decided 100% yet, but I can tell you it will have home-made "cheese!"

    5 · October 24, 2013

    • Rachael

I think I'll do mini versions of the mushroom and "camembert" en croute that I posted on the FB group. If I can get them to behave in mini versions, that is.

I also made a wheel of "English Cheddar."

I have a question that doesn't pertain to the meetup, but I didn't know where else to ask (I'm new to the site). I have a great cheesecake recipe, but I'm not sure how to make it vegan-friendly and still keep the same taste and consistency. Can anyone offer some suggestions?

    1 · October 31, 2013

    • Ryan

I've seen lots of creative non-dairy methods used and have even tasted many great vegan cheesecakes...so I know it can be easily done! Bakers more experienced than me can probably offer specific ideas. But here are a few vegan cheesecake recipes that might offer you some ideas: http://allrecipes.com...http://www.veganbakin...http://dairyfreecooki...

      1 · November 2, 2013

    • Rachael

There are basically 3 different methods for making vegan cheesecake: soft tofu based, cashew (or other nut) based, and substituting 1:1 the non-vegan components for their vegan counterparts (commercial or homemade vegan cream cheese, egg replacer, etc.). Ryans links have recipes from all 3 methods. :)

Since you already have a recipe, that last method of substituting vegan for nonvegan ingredients might work best for you. Veganizing desserts generally takes a bit of trial and error to see what you like, but usually with desserts, even the "failures" are still enjoyable!

I might be late. Save me a plate :)

Do you mind that I am a pescatarian?

    November 3, 2013

    • Ryan

Hi Kevin: We don't mind at all! We welcome everyone! However, the potluck is 100% vegan (no animal products including meat, fish, dairy, eggs, honey, etc.). So if you choose to bring a dish, please make sure it's vegan. Let us know if you need any ideas!

Haven't decided on a dish yet, and, if I get called in to work, I will need to go in. Hopefully I will see you Monday evening. I will bring either Tempeh Salad, or some kind of stew.
By the way, I did not see the ARFF booth at Veg Fest this year. Did I miss it? I did not see Carla and David either. Also, thank you so much to the organizers for putting the music at the other end from Animal Haven!

Jerry, you can use Better Than Cream Cheese to replace cow milk cream cheese. What is in your recipe? We will help you.

Hi everyone :-) I work on mondays until 7-ish pm. How long will you all be there?? Any chance I can make it?? I want to meet some Vegan friends!

    October 29, 2013

    • Charlie

We start eating very close to 7pm, so you will miss out on some of the dishes, but there are usually more people arriving after that. You can always come and see how it works for you.
