Cowichan Valley Bike Ride

  • Jun 8, 2014 · 10:00 AM

Start time: 10:00AM at Cowichan Bay. First-timers please call[masked] before 6pm the day before.

This will be a “3 bike” bike ride. This means that it is an intermediate ride of around 50km through rolling countryside, which will involve longish climbs and short steep hills. It will be mostly on quiet paved roads, and a portion of unpaved Trans-Canada Trail.

We will be starting our ride in Cowichan Bay, at Hecate Park. We ride along Cowichan Bay, across the highway at Bench Road, and down to Cowichan Station. Then up the long hill to the Kinsol Trestle where we will spend some time enjoying the sights. From there we ride towards Duncan on the Trans-Canada Trail. It is a bit rough in places, not suitable for narrow-tire road bikes, but fine for hybrid bikes. We will have lunch at Zanatta Vineyard – they have a picnic area. There will be time for tasting if participants wish. Then the ride goes through Duncan, with a stop at Duncan Garage for baked goodies and coffee, and back to Cowichan Bay via stops at St. Peter's 1867 Church and/or the derelict Butter Church, the Pioneer Memorial and other historic sites as participants wish.

Carpooling can be arranged between participants with bike racks. For help with this call me at[masked]-1436.

Bring water, snacks, lunch and raingear. A helmet is mandatory, and reflective gear is a good idea. Please be sure to have a spare tube in case of a flat tire.

Please be aware that this is a Club Tread event and our rules apply. You can read our Application Form and Event Liability Waiver, which are in the list of files under the “More” link and give a good idea of expectations for event participants and coordinators.

You will be required to sign our waiver, which is the standard release that we have all participants sign at Club Tread events, and on which you must supply a current emergency contact phone#.

Butter Church: "...The original mission church for the Cowichan Indians built in 1870 but abandoned in 1880 in favour of St Ann's Church. It has remained for over 100 years a haunted structure on the hill, abandoned, deconsecrated and desecrated..."

Yes, we absolutely are planning to! We will start the ride at Hecate Park in Cowichan Bay - anyone from here will drive there with their bikes. I anticipate we'll be there at around 10am. Looking forward to it!

    Hi Veronica and John,
Wish Eddie and I could come but I'm taking him to the airport that morning. Sounds like a great ride especially if the weather stays as lovely as it is now. Have fun.
