"Embrace the Cold" Ride

Hello Hardy Souls.

I have changed my RSVP for this to No. I'm just not equipped for wind chills of -17 that the CBC is predicting. That is serious frostbite territory.

I'll leave the ride up though so that hardier souls than I can still get together if they wish. Change your RSVP accordingly. Please use the page for any discussion.

Have fun!

Simon

    Ride Review (part 2)

Dress. The minimum clothing recommended for sub-zero conditions with wind-chill is as follows:

Headwear - skull cap with helmet. Drencher helmet cover will also mitigate wind chill if needed. Neck warmer or balaclava if windchill extreme.

Top - three layers including windbreaker.

Bottom - two layers - tights or thermal underwear with windbreaker outer.

Hands - cool weather gloves with drencher outers, or ski gloves.

Feet - wool socks, shoes, drencher shoe covers.

Conclusion. Cold weather rides are recommended to continue. Members are encouraged to build their collections of wet weather and cold weather clothing for such rides. MEC has a good selection.

    Ride Review - "Embrace the Cold" - 7 Dec[masked]:00-13:00

General. Weather was clear and sub-zero with wind chill at about -10°C. Overall, the ride was a success and was a good test of winter clothing and equipment.

Route. Caffe Fantastico, Galloping Goose to Colwood, Sooke Road to Metchosin, Metchosin Road, Lagood Road, Ocean Blvd, Old Island Hwy, Trans-Canada Hwy, back to Victoria. Total Distance: 31 km

Road Conditions. Generally good conditions. Galloping Goose became icy and snow-covered past View Royal towards Colwood, though this did not impede us in any way as tire traction was still good. Roads in Metchosin were icy on shoulders; riding in lane mitigated this problem. Ocean Blvd was clear, as was Old Island Hwy and Trans-Canada.

    So…how was it?

Mark and I rode the Galloping Goose through Colwood, then Metchosin via Old Island Highway, then Esquimalt Lagoon, up the hill to Colwood, and back via Old Island Hwy and Trans Canada. Temperature-wise, our clothing stood the cold. Trail began to get icy and snowy uphill to Colwood around Thetis Lake and west, though not really unsafe. Overall, great ride.

I'm out too - still recovering from this cold otherwise I would do it just for the challenge….that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Just got in from walking the dogs. Considering the cold and potential wind factor, I'm going to bail on tomorrow too.

Dagwoods in Langford (near Goldstream Bikes) has bike locks provided (get key from clerk). Its a good place to sit, warm up, and I'm sure that if you bring a bag lunch, they won't mind. Good potty stop too. Just an idea.

Royal Roads University cafeteria is open on weekends. It's about 20km each way from Cafe Fantastico and then we can have at least a ONE lagoon ride. The food isn't outstanding though.

How about a nice gentle slope to Langford. There is the Station House or Log house pub. Or a coffee shop on Goldstream ave in down town Langford

If people are looking for a different spot to warm up may I suggest a coastal ride through Oak Bay turning west at Cedar Hill X Rd and then stop at Kuma Noodles (just past Shelbourne at #[masked] Cedar Hill X Road beside the Korean grocery). The food is typical Japanese dining hall cooking (many dishes of which you don't find in other Japanese restaurants).

I work Saturday so I can't come and Kuma isn't open Sunday for the Mt Doug ride. Zannen! :(

Still trying to tackle those hills but I am not up to speed yet and don't want to hold the group up. I will go as long as it is not a hilly route! I just don't wast to be a burden.

Patty!! Me and Johanna took a more leisurely paced route (trails) to the Red Barn, and you'd have had a really good time! We got there about 1/2 minute after the "others" who took a longer route. We also came back with "the others" behind us, but soon they all passed us, no worries, because we were not trying to keep up to them. You should come on our "slower rides" (more fun too!)

I would suggest a ride out to Matticks. Nice place to warm up inside, and then ride back. I can't join you because its the pre-ride for the GVCC's Christmas Ride (to work out the kinks) and also, taaa daaaa, its my birthday!

I thought of Matticks but as a last resort. We've all been there so many times, it is rather hard to get excited about. And they are overpriced and have lousy coffee! Somewhere we've never been before?

Wish I could go, but that day also happens to be the launch day for Christmas party season.
