Humpback Reservoir

45 Km of moderate cycling to the Humpback Reservoir, the other side of Langford and especially the ride down Humpback Road, which is probably new territory to most of us. Picnic Lunch at the Reservoir. We'll take the usual scenic detour through View Royal and the E & N Trail "possibly" ending at Spinnakers or Canoe.

Before attending a ride with Victoria Cycling Adventures I will complete the general Cycling Safety Quiz and the Meetup Procedures Quiz.

By attending this ride, I declare that I have read, understood and agree to the contents of Victoria Cycling Adventures Waiver and Policies and Procedures.

For your safety we will break the ride into smaller groups while on busy roads. Please familiarize yourself with our Cycling procedures for large groups.

If this is your first ride with us, please print, sign and bring with you a copy of our waiver.

In case of bad weather, we will reschedule this ride and substitute an Embrace The Rain Ride in its place. Hey - we live in a rain forest, its gonna rain! Let's learn to enjoy it. This will be a short ride in town with a stop to warm up and dry out.

As always, it was a great ride with fun companions. I have yet to go on a ride with this group that I don't enjoy!

I slept in this morning so wasn't able to meet the group. I did however get out for a really good bike ride. Here's where I went… https://www.strava.com/activities/110502288

Getting there was certainly half the fun. I will have to pre-ride Langford before the next time in that area to figure at the best way of getting through it on the official trail. Sorry for those mess ups! It was worth the big hill at the beginning of Humpback Road to get to the reservoir. Thanks to Patrick, we discovered it is possible to actually walk on the dam and see the peaceful lake behind it. The rest of Humpback Road was very scenic with thick forest and a stream on the right hand side. Riding with all the traffic on Sooke Road wasn't so great but it got us to the Galloping Goose. Always pleasant to abandon the GG for the ride through View Royal and new E & N Rail Trail to wind it up at Spinnakers. Thanks to everyone who came and made that a memorable ride. We'll do it every year.

I enjoyed the route today, especially all the little out and back turnarounds that Simon added just for us :-)

Humpback was pretty, now if we could find a[masked]km route just like that little stretch of road I'd be in heaven.

There are a lot of cycling "how to" videos on the web. I found these short, informative vids on Youtube at CyclingSecrets. This one in particular that highlights some of the important safety tips and techniques Simon has been promoting through the quizzes he's put up. Take a look; you may find them interesting as well and improve your knowledge and skill, increasing your enjoyment and safety on your bike, whether riding alone or in a group. http://youtu.be/oHGfzeH6Qg4

At least we don't travel as fast or as close together as the racers, reducing the risk of a big pileup. I can't imagine having the presence of mind to duck my head and just roll with the bike if doing a front flip. Every instinct would be to throw out my arms and protect my head.
