CINCO DE MAYO TACO RIDE

Okay, it’s not exactly Cinco de Mayo, but that won’t stop us from having a taco-fest on 2 wheels!

Come and join us on a 18km ride featuring some of Victoria’s finest taquerias (i.e.: taco joints) and also learn some history on Spanish exploration of B.C. along with the history of Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the U.S. and Mexico. Our route will include Rica Salsa in Cook Street Village, Taco Justice League in North Park, and Cafe Mexi-go in Market Square.

The ride will start at 11:00 AM at Café Fantastico in Dockside Green (where the Goose meets Harbour Road). Please note the later start. Please note the following logistical rules for this ride:

• Due to anticipated demand, the ride will be limited to members of the VCAC only. Join the VCAC at VCAC.net before you RSVP to this ride.

• Ridership is capped at 24 participants.

• We have pre-ordered an assortment of tacos for each location to keep ordering simplified and prices reasonable.

• Vegetarian tacos will be available.

• Cost is $10 for 3 tacos, one at each location. Cost also includes the $1 ride administration fee and $1 gratuity for the wait staff. Payment shall be made upon ride registration.

• When possible, we will be eating our tacos at a nearby location away from the restaurant.

• Extras are to be purchased separately and at regular menu prices. Suggest you bring water to quench the heat!

Tacos available at each location:

Rica Salsa: Beef, Chicken, Pork, Vegetarian (all soft shell)

TJL: Pork, Tuna, Deep-fried avocado (all soft shell)

Cafe Mexi-go: Beef, Chicken, Pork, Vegetarian (all crispy shell)

On a lighter note, you can wear Mexican or Spanish gear when you’re riding! Just don’t forget your helmet.

PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY SO THAT WE CAN GET EVERYONE REGISTERED AND LEAVE ON TIME PROMPTLY AT 11. ORGANIZERS WILL BE AT CAFE FANTASTICO FROM 10:30 ON. GRAB A COFFEE, REGISTER AND THEN SOCIALIZE!

Thank you to Darren and Simon for the fun ride yesterday. I loved it and only got to Taco Place number 2. I had to leave to meet a friend down down for the pipeline thing. I'm so glad to have started biking again so much, this morning I went for a solo bright and early, the air was magnificently clean, even downtown. Now I'm on my way to my hiking group, but I wish I could do both hiking and biking on Sunday. Thanks again!

By the way, I didn't take any photos of the ride due to my ride leading/menu planning duties. If anyone has taken photos from the ride, please post them up!

Glad to see all the positive comments about the ride! Perhaps we can do another one next year? In the meantime, I'm planning a fishing industry ride which may involve seafood!

My first ride with the group...loads of fun and I saw a new side to Victoria's historical past, too. Thanks everyone for making it such a great ride. J

That was a fun way to spend an otherwise gloomy Spring Saturday. If anyone else has any ideas for a moderately paced, meandering foodie ride, please let us know! There are two days in a weekend and we have only planned for rides on one of them so far. Rides like this are great for the other day. Thanks Darren for the idea, for organizing it, leading it and the history lesson.

...and twelve of the twenty went for beers afterwards. A new record!

Moderately paced? I was going 20 and could not keep up, speeds of 25 and sometimes 30 are not "moderate", so in future I'll just stick to my STR rides, which are 14 to 18 ish and quite manageable. Would be nice to know where the beer-stop is, and we could all gather at the end of our respective rides, that would be nice too!

Sorry I had to bail, but by the time I got to Tall Totem (Beacon Hill Park) I was already near death, and y'all were so far ahead, I went home via Vic West Fest, and got home in the rain storm, I hope you all stayed dry!

I just read the email from Simon saying rsvp 'no' if I want to come for the ride but not the tacos. Is that still okay? Because now the numbers are down to 21. Anyways, I'll pay for them if they are already ordered, but if not I'm not really a taco fan, just a bike-with-the-group fan! So, whatever works.

That's fine. I'll send out another email to the whole membership today, I'm sure we'll fill the 24 taco spots.

HI Gaetanne, I'm going (but said "no" to RSVP) and I know there are others too. We will tag along at the back, so that the "taco-eaters" are all ahead of us. Looking forward to seeing you again, we can have our own little "STR" at the back. Norah.

      May 9, 2014

  • Norah M.

I will un-RSVP so that another taco-eater can have my spot, no worries. Norah.

Hi Simon, you didn't post the rout. should we all start at Café Fantastico?

    May 7, 2014

    • Simon W.

Yes, as we need to collect all the money at the beginning and know the exact count of riders so we can divide it up.

      May 8, 2014

  • Norah M.

I will be joining the ride, but NOT having Tacos, I will volunteer to be "bike watcher" for the people going inside, if that would help. Norah.

We'll probably just have one person go in and pay and pick up the food and then eat outside rather than try to get 24 people inside a restaurant at lunch time on a Saturday!
