At this point, I am planning to paddle over to Discovery Island next Wednesday (June 26), leaving the boat ramp at Oak Bay Marina at 2:30 pm. We will cook supper that evening and breakfast the next day, camping on Discovery Island for the night. We will return via a circumnavigation of Chatham Island and be back to the Oak Bay Marina in the early to mid-afternoon on Thursday, June 27, 2013. Somewhere during this time, we may head over to Trial Island to play in the current.
Sea kayakers should be at least intermediate level. Discovery Island has campsites and 2 outhouses, but no running water. Each paddler should be self-contained (i.e., his/her own cooking gear; water; strong/wind-resistant and waterproof tent; sleeping pad; food, incl. high energy snack food; and complete safety gear).
Safety gear would include at least: drysuit or wetsuit, incl. extra pile clothing, hat, goggles, gloves; a thermos of hot soup (to be put on the boat deck to-from Oak Bay); pump; paddle float; extra paddle; throw bag; strong sprayskirt; + an intermediate or higher paddling ability, incl. self-rescue skills. It is important to understand that each participant is responsible for his/her own decisions and safety at all points in time on this trip. There is no "leadership" as such for this activity. We are a group of peers.
To record our fun, bring a waterproof digicam or videocam (if you have one).
As well, bring a good book!
Camping fee is $10 per night per camper. Please bring the fee with you.
As well, please bring your cooking and drinking water.
Best regards, Brad
