Short Fiction Subgroup

  • Feb 17, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

I've been a leader for an artist's support group as well as an organizer and member of other writer's groups. I believe in being a sensitive and supportive reader, wanting the story to be the winner. I am currently a grad student in Creative Writing at UBC, taking the summer off and wanting to create a core of dedicated writer/readers here in Victoria.

New requirements for this group:

— you must be currently writing short fiction and have at least one piece to share that you want feedback on;

— you must bring 8-10 copies of a short story, maximum of 10 pages, one page minimum, for us to read and critique, or, preferably, post here under files and then notify the group that it's here;

— format is 12 point, Times Roman, double-spaced — this evens up the playing field in terms of length, also readability and gives the reader space between lines for comments, corrections, etc.;

— when you come, you can choose to give us your email address and ask us to send our comments to you via email if you don't feel ready for a group critique;

— we will discuss feedback/critique styles. You will be able to ask for what you specifically want feed back on, i.e. a particular character, plot, continuity, dialogue, development, etc. — whatever you are having problems with;

-- If your story is longer than 10 pages, post the section you'd like to be critiqued and bring copies of the rest. Depending on the numbers of writers that show up, and how much time we each have, we may be able to look at more of your story.

— "The only way to begin is to begin, and begin right now. If you like, begin the minute you finish reading this paragraph. For sure, begin before you finish reading this book. I have no doubt the day is coming when you will be wiser or better informed or more highly skilled than you are now, but you will never be more ready to begin writing than you are right this minute. The time has come. You already know, more or less, what a good story looks like. You’ve already got in mind some human situation that matters to you. You need nothing more. Begin with whatever gives you the impetus to begin: an image, a fantasy, a situation, a memory, a motion, a situation, a set of people—anything at all that arouses your imagination. The job is only to get some or all of this into words able to reach and touch an unknown, unseen somebody “out there” known as the Reader. You must plunge into it. And you must do it now." Hello, all, I spoke to The Bent Mast and it sounds good. It's located at 512 Simcoe in James Bay. The upstairs (haunted) room is available that night, March 17, from 7-9, at no charge. There's no table service up there so we'd have to order our own drinks (and they have drip coffee and tea, no espresso drinks) and they would bring them up.
    They don't have an up-to-date menu online, but their specialties are Homemade burgers; salads; pasta; daily soup plus everyday French onion soup and borscht.
    Those of you who are planning to attend next month: what do you think? Please weigh in, yea or nay.
    We could do a trial run and see. If you have concerns about meeting at a bar or meeting in James Bay, etc, please let me know asap. Thanks,
    Angela

    It's looking like Bent Mast so far, so I say lets give it a try. Any objections?

    Oh, what shall i do with comments on the three stories that were posted?

      Sorry for the drop out - on a bit of a cleaning frenzy for company, [who arrive this afternoon]. I make comments on paper - pretty old school - so would prefer to bring to next meeting. If we can hold on to our paper until then, I would be happy.

    Hi! Thank you for that kind and generous offer, Cassie! Question and concern regarding your suggestion: Q - where are you located?
    and Concern - we could always share the cost between whoever attends by mentioning that up front. Many Meetup groups have a small charge.
    But, I'm not sure about meeting in a place that would be dependent on the attendance of one member. If it's a public place, the meeting couldn't get thrown off-track by something unexpected keeping you away, etc.
    Phil — as far as Serious in Esquimalt, I spoke to them about it once. It seems they have a hard-core Italian language (or maybe Spanish?) group that has met there for 7 years on Mon. night. When I asked them if they would speak to that group to see if they'd mind sharing it, they were not enthusiastic and never did get back to me. Then I decided it could be quite noisy, what with 10-20 people speaking and practicing their Italiano, so, perhaps not. That would be my first choice.
    Calling the Bent Mast today.

      I can also make sure to give keys to someone whom I know will be attending, if I have to be away. With all that being said, though... I do kinda like the idea of stepping away from the home and kids for the evening. Still, it's an option. :)

      Looks like the Serious place is out anyway.

    I have a suggestion, re: venue. We were discussing that we needed someplace more quiet.... There is a meeting room in my building that is available to rent, with a deposit (which I can foot). It has coffee machines. All it would need is for someone to pitch in the cream/milk and sugar, and for us each to bring our own mugs. If this sounds like a good idea, let me know in advance, so that I can book it.

    I've just uploaded Nightingale 10pg for 2014FEB17.doc. In our upcoming discussion, I am looking for comments on character development [main character].

    For those who worked with the previous file, this has been formatted to standard, but has not been altered.

    Hello, all! I've just posted a newly revised version of Big Dogs — the file is called Big Dogs 2.

    I just posted Road Rage for the Short Fiction group on Feb 17. I value all input, but am especially looking for comments about clarity (or lack of it) in some of this story's more complex scenes.

    Thomas, some new people will be coming this week. Are we still reading your Nightingale story? Anyone else have work to post? I'll be getting mine up by Friday. Sorry, I'm breaking my own rules. Sorry. (At least it's only 7-8 pages, though.)

    Hi, I have posted a revision of my short story that I shared last time. It is called Floating_version2 and should be in the files section.

    1 · February 11, 2014

  • Philip J.

    Clarification please. Are members posting stories discussed at the last meeting with changes, or is it new stories all around?

    February 1, 2014

    • Angela M.

      Philip -- it's up to each individual writer.
