Overview of Self-Publishing

Sure you scribble. Sometimes you even really like what you've written. But what comes next? If you dream of holding a bound, glossy book in your hot little hands - this session will give you the introduction to the world of Self-Publishing. Media is changing - rapidly - and the old stigmas have fallen by the wayside as indie press has caught up to offer quality, control and professionalism like never before. There are pros and cons to any publishing venture; come learn the options in Self-Publishing and see if it's the right avenue for you.

(Note for newcomers: We actually meet in the Atrium, next door, but access is through the coffee shop. If the coffee shop is closed then there is a security guard at the Atrium's Blanshard St entrance who will usually let you in.)

Astra was an excellent, engaging facilitator with strong subject knowledge. This was my first time attending and meetups are marketed as being an hour long. I left at 2.25 hours in due to other plans and there was still a fair bit left to cover. I was disappointed to miss the end. If an event is going to go significantly past the 1 hour mark is there any way to notify participants so they can plan for it appropriately?

Hello Ingrid. Apologies for the confusion; I was the one who actually posted the meeting details and I set a start time but no end time. I guess there was be a default duration of an hour somewhere that I didn’t notice. As Peter Ehm said; more people means longer duration. But I would say our meetings are typically 2-3 hours long.

But there have been a couple of issues with the website over the past year. So if you could point to where you are seeing an end time listed for this meeting that would be a great help.

Hi Peter, it must be embedded somehow in the calendar notice. When I added the invite it to my calendar originally it came up as 1 hour long. It's weird because when I tried doing it again just now, it showed 3 hours. Gremlins?

Third meeting I've been feasted upon by some micro pests at this venue. Did anyone else get bitten by some seemingly invisible vermin?

Suggestion: Have people hold questions & comments till the end of the presentation

Free book by Guy Kawasaki on self-publishing e-books. Thought it might be of interest... time-sensitive, but I'm not sure how many days are left on this giveaway. Of course, I bought it myself last year... http://www.bookbaby.com/free-guide/ape-guide?Source=BO1428&Dest=https://www.pages04.net/discmakers-cdbaby/BookBaby_GuyKawasaki/APE_guide?utm_campaign=BO1428&utm_source=BBOff&utm_medium=Email

I will try to get there if only to offer some comment on my own experiences of self-publishing six books

I want to go but I am a little afraid of committing because it looks like the crowd will be huge. Nonetheless I say yes – a creative writing meet up that sounds essential.

How much do you know about self-publishing? Try our survey at http://surveys.pegasuspress.ca/index.php?r=survey/index/sid/117125/lang/en -- it could be very educational!

Sweet! Can I plug my blog here in this context? You're talking about a topic close to my heart. As an editor and former book producer at FriesenPress, I blog a bit about writing, manuscript preparation, and the like. http://publishingrenee.wordpress.com/

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
