The term selfpub is usually used to mean giving the task to a self-publisher. There is an alternative. One can establish a company ($100 a year in Victoria) and do all the tasks a publisher does UP TO sending to a printer. It is not difficult, and if anybody wants help, just ask me.
This approach does NOT solve the distribution problem. But in practice, nor does using a firm like Trafford .
I published (not wrote) one airforce book and sold 3,000 copies because it was memoirs and all authors wanted copies. I published a military memoir and only sold 1,000. I published a children's book and sold 3,000. It was about Victoria and I was NOT successful in distributing it elsewhere. Moreover, I had to make more than half those sales by doing so at craft sales. The dealers sold fewer than 1500.
It seems likely going the eroute offers a better prospect of success. If one chose to supplement that by publishing, say, 300 copies, soft cover, perfect bound, 256 pages, no color inside, three-color cover, as a basis from which to sell ebooks, the capital cost would be about $,3000 plus whatever design of the cover costs. That assumes one knows how to make an ebook. I don't and would have to teach myself.
Many of my airforce colleagues have written memoirs and used Trafford. All but one lost money.
Please think of this is possibly-useful background material.
