My name is Gordon F. and I am a new organizer with the Victoria Outdoor and Social group. Many of you might know me from my hike and walks I have hosted through other groups. My first event with this group is not going to be a hiking/walking but a social event. For many years, I have been taking fiends to experience plays put on by William Head on Stage (or WHoS) held inside William Head prison. “Yes I said inside the Prison” This year performance is Fractured Fables: The Prison Puppet Project.
Many people have heard about WHoS but are nervous about going by themselves because it is inside a prison, so I am giving you the chance to go as a group and hopefully have a new enjoyable experience.
If you have never attended a play put on by WHoS they are great. I have seen professional shows not as good as these are. The inmates poor there heart and soul into the shows. After the show, the inmates are willing to talk to you about their experience.
Seven weeks ago, 27 prisoners embarked upon an impossible task: to build a giant show from scratch, using the art of puppetry to tell all their own stories. There is no instruction manual.
The result is an hour of pure madness–an intense collage of stories where animals and humans reveal themselves through humour, darkness, and love.
This year William Head on Stage (or WHoS) has joined forces with Ingrid Hansen & Anne Cirillo from SNAFU, Peter Balkwill from Calgary’s Old Trout Puppet Workshop, island musician Katrina Kadoski (Cougar Annie Tales), designers Carole Klemm and Poe Limkul to create, design, build and perform thirteen original stories for you, the general public. .
Co-director Ingrid Hansen states that “The stakes have never been higher for these men–they have lived in institutions, some for most of their lives, and now they are asked to open their hearts and to show themselves vulnerable in front of an outside audience. Everyone meets the challenge full on, buzzing with fear and adrenaline, haunted by past mistakes and ready for new beginnings. We laugh a lot–we have to, the whole project is so impossible and the potential for growth is unending. The most amazing thing for me is to watch inmates who are ‘old hats’ at the theatre company counsel the newbies, and talk them down from the ledge when the stage fright sets in. Together, we can tackle the impossible.”
