Victoria Boaters' Benefit Bash

  • Dec 19, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • North Saanich Yacht Club

As of this morning we have reorganized the venue to allow more space for dining and dancing. We can now have eighty people, not seventy. So there are still tickets available.

It would be great to get out more members - we have only about ten percent of our membership attending, and a huge effort and a lot of support from sponsors has been put in to make this memorable as well as affordable. A great finish to what has been a wonderful year of sailing, and a great time to connect sailors, crews and ideas for 2014. Please join us!

If you are sitting on the fence, now is the time to decide...go to http://www.victoriaboatersbenefitbash.org to pay for your ticket. At $65 for a gourmet buffet, and a Valdy concert with live band for dancing its a steal....

______________________________________________________

Another Updated Notice! November 21st...less than a month to go!

The Victoria Boaters' Benefit Bash is now open to all sailors, their families and friends...as many as you like until we have met our max of 80. This is going to be such a fun event, we want to share it with as many people as we can.

Quite a number of people who had originally booked can no longer make it so we need your help to sell the rest of the tickets. As of today, we have approximately 20 more tickets to sell--and sell we must to cover expenses. So please, tell everyone you know--get the word out there!!

And remember, this is a gourmet meal so we must submit our guest numbers in advance so no tickets will be sold at the door...all tickets must be purchased online at http://www.victoriaboatersbenefitbash.org/PayNow.html or through Tricia at [masked].

And to make this event even more attractive there have been a few changes we think you are going to like...

Instead of making just a guest appearance with a couple of songs, Valdy has offered to give us our very own concert!! Valdy is playing the entire first set, with The Soul Shakers backing him up on the latter part of the set. How awesome!

Also, the manager at the Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club has changed and so has some of the event particulars...to our favour:)  Last call is now 12:30 am rather than 11:30 pm and the band can play right up until 1 am.  And the menu has been spiced up with some fancy additions. Go to http://www.victoriaboatersbenefitbash.org/Details.html to check out the changes to the Tentative Schedule and The Menu.

Although the Auction items list is growing, we would like to see even more items if possible. We need your help to ask your local businesses if they would be willing to support Mercy Ships which, with your help and support, seeks to become the face of love in action, bringing hope and healing to the world's forgotten poor. Go to http://www.victoriaboatersbenefitbash.org/Auction.html to see all the generous offers we have so far.

If you have any questions, please contact me...

I look forward to partying with you! Tricia

Updated Notice. Please read!

Hi everyone. Tickets are now on sale on the websiteThe website is http://www.victoriaboatersbenefitbash.org . Just click on the payment tab. You can pay by email money transfer, credit card, debit, PayPal - all the details are on the Pay Now page. If you are paying by cheque or cash please contact Tricia on how to get either to her. Once you've paid, your ticket will be reserved and at the door waiting for you. The website or through Tricia is the ONLY way you can buy a ticket as none will be sold at the door.

Please also note that donations to Mercy Ships and your Ahoy Sailors memberships are voluntary (but appreciated..)....

Thanks

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After what seems like a long month or so of discussing locations, menus, entertainment, details, details and more details, the Victoria Boaters’ Benefit Bash is all confirmed for December 19th at the North Saanich Yacht Club. Thank you Tricia and her team!!

The time is 6 pm to 1 am. We’ll start with a gourmet buffet meal, with Valdy giving us a personal concert, then The Soul Shakers will get us up dancing... we'll have a guest appearance from our MP Elizabeth May, with great door prizes as well as a Live Auction, Silent Auction, and 50/50 draw to benefit Mercy Ships, the world's leading non-governmental ship-based medical organization. With some generosity from our friends and patrons (and some tough bargaining befitting an experienced captain and quartermaster) Tricia has managed to keep tickets to only $65.00. Thanks again Tricia!!

Dress is optional, but we are hoping everyone will turn up in their blazer and party dress best.

To buy your tickets, please go to our website at http://www.victoriaboatersbenefitbash.org . You can pay by email money transfer, credit card, debit, PayPal, cheque - all the details are on the Pay Now page. Once you’ve paid, your ticket will be reserved and at the door waiting for you.

Here you’ll also find details on location, menu, the evening’s programme, door prizes and auction items. (The Auction page will be continually changing as more items come in, so please keep checking it out so you don’t miss any great deals.) You can also use the site to make a personal donation to Mercy Ships and to catch up on your membership Ahoy Sailors.

This party is open to all sailors, and sailor's family and friends....and even friends of friends:) We are looking for a sell-out crowd here & we want you to have fun! So invite all your friends!

We are still working hard on getting more donations for the Auctions and Door Prizes. If you have anything at all you can donate, please let us know. Mercy Ships is giving us a little script to use when approaching businesses. If you think you have an interested donor and need help in approaching them, just please contact Tricia at[masked] or email [masked]

We also floated the idea (no pun intended) of asking members to donate used boating gear for our Live Auction, and we are already getting offers and equipment. So please look in your bilges and ask all your boating friends & neighbours. We only ask that the items be in good condition so they will be easy to auction off. We will be arranging pick up if you need help getting it to us.

Thank you all for your support and we look forward to partying with you!!

What a thrill I won a giant gift at this event, thank you!
My special ticket was called near closing time!
The sea deities must like me this year won at another sail event too!
Wondering what will happen in our New Year we're having soon. Happy New Year to All !

    Cont'd from previous

It was a bit sad to see only 30 or so members of our group of 359 to attend this great event. Here's hoping that next season will be as good as the last, and that we have built some momentum. We should all work at getting more boat owners involved, and growing the membership in terms of commitment and participation, so the next Christmas party will be just as successful. Thanks to all of those who came out on Shoto, for the camaraderie, great company, excellent crewing and fond memories (including some very nice potluck meals). (i was blessed with 39 days sailing and more than forty members out as crew this summer). It would have meant a lot more days at dock without you (and special thanks to those who helped put her away for the winter.) Hopefully we also made a little contribution to spreading the joys of sailing to many who wouldn't otherwise have the chance to enjoy our world class waters. Warmest Best Wishes to all for this Christmas Season

Thirdly, I want to thank Valdy, Elizabeth May, Isobel of Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club, all her staff including the amazing chef Leah, Tim Maloney of Mercy Ships, The Soul Shakers, David Wynne, everyone who donated, and everyone else that added energy into the creation of this event. Your synergistic energy helped create this magical event.

Well, that was so much fun I am going to go for it and ask how many would be interested in doing it again next year. The website does say 1st Annual:) It seems such a shame to work so hard to figure out how to make this happen to have it all end there.

So a show of hands, please, who would be interested in a Second Annual??

Secondly, I want to thank everyone who assisted in raising approx. $3000 last night for Mercy Ships, which because of the December doubling grant translates into almost $6000. I thank those who opened your hearts and wallets to donate, yet as we saw in the Live Auction, it takes more than just the winner to make that donation happen. It seems to me everyone present assisted if not by donating a item or offering a bid, then by urging the bidders on. My love language is doing things to make someone's life better so it really warms my heart to be a part of a group that has done just that for the poorest of poor on this planet.....continued on page 3

First of all, I want to thank every single person who attended last night. It's a networker's dream to see everyone up and mingling, enjoying themselves and each other--the original purpose of the party. You all got along so well, and pitched in and helped where need be (special thank you to Jim who took care of the door for me), that everything ran along so smoothly I was able to achieve my goal for the party--to have fun!! ...continued on page 2...

Since the numbers attending according to this site are not indicative of tickets sold, I just took the cap off the number of RSVPs possible. Will adjust as need be. Also, we limited the number of guests for each person to 1 to begin with so the 350 members of Ahoy Sailors had at least somewhat of a chance. Now that everyone has had a fair kick at the can, I have taken off the restriction of how many guests you can invite. Before I go to other clubs, I figured I would give you the chance to invite more of your friends. So get on the phone, email, whatever & start inviting:)

To pay for the extra tickets, just go to the website http://www.victoriaboatersbenefitbash.org and pay by credit card or PayPal, or send me an Interac etransfer or contact me re sending me a cheque or pay by cash.

    Let's party!

Awkward. but this must be asked, since I have the memory of a- oh was that a squirrel. where was I? Oh good thing I left me note! will there be optioinal name tags ? if you can put this out and get some feed back on name tags, I have no problem wearing them as it is easier than checking my DL to see who I am lol.
I do want to network with boating enthusiasts and my "dang there goes that squirrel again". thought was to have if not just a name but also crew or captian's and perhaps preferance of vessel owned or crewed on?
For me it will be more of an ice breaker to chat rather than a need to know about some ones personal information.
Hi I am Brad and the skipper of a sailboat, I see you are interested in crewing on a sailboat sort of thing.

    2 · November 9, 2013

    • Tricia B.

I want to know the name of everyone there since this is a networking party. I have a terrible memory for names but if I see it written, I have a chance of remembering...so in my books, names tags are a must:)

      November 10, 2013

    • Tricia B.

Good idea to have the name of the boat & whether people are looking to find crew or a boat. That means everyone has to send in this information to me...hear that everyone?! The person who has currently volunteered to make the name tags isn't even able to come to the party. I will run this by him.

      November 10, 2013

  • Tricia B.

People have also asked whether the name can be changed if they or their guest cannot come at the last minute. No problem.

    November 8, 2013

  • Tricia B.

A number of women have asked me about going to the dance without a date. My response is that I purposely haven't invited a date because I figure I am going with 79 other people!! lol

This event is all about sailors getting to know other sailors so the unwritten rule of the party is that you have to talk at least once with everyone else there & that anyone can join in a conversation with anyone else.

And the rule for dancing is that you don't need a partner to dance--you can dance alone or in a group & anyone, male or female, can ask anyone else, male or female, to dance.

With the meal & the Valdy concert, and the auctions, and the dancing & 79 people to introduce yourself to, I don't think anyone needs to worry about coming without a date. I think the night will be very full and fun for singles and couples alike.

Besides, all the connections you will make at this party is bound to find you either a boat or crew to go sailing with next summer. :)

Badly worded... You may lose your reserved spot if you don't buy your tickets by this weekend...

What a great party band The Soul Shakers are. Their name is apt. I danced with them to the end last night at Swans. The dance floor was always full, the crowd was jumping & singing along & the applause at the end was so loud & long the band had to play another number. What fun. Just to let everyone know I have hopefully solved the problem of paying for Membership donations by allowing you to add the $5 to however you pay for your Party ticket. I would like to avoid a bottleneck at the door so prefer not to have to worry about the $5 when we are there to have fun!!

The website should be up & running soon--will let you know about that shortly.

Gentle reminder to everyone signing up - we are trying to be fair in allocating tickets to members first as it looks very likely we'll be sold out. So lets make sure we have all paid our $5 dues - its not a lot of money for all the great benefits we are getting from membership. Lets show Dominique our support and appreciation..

If you can't pay on line we will arrange for you to make the donation at the door.

Great idea about the good boating gear, David. We can put them up for Live or Silent Auction (planning on having both so we need items to sell) in order to raise funds for Mercy Ships. What a great way for boaters to donate to such a worthy cause. I like it!

Should we organize donations of used boat gear - as long as its relatively good stuff? Things we might otherwise put on Craig's list or in the Boater's Exchange? Thank you for all those who have offered their help & support. Very much appreciated. Just let us get the price of the tickets & the website up & running & then we will have a push on getting donations for door prizes & the Silent Auction. So put your thinking caps on for who you can ask for support.

And we would really, really, really appreciate someone to volunteer to coordinate all those donations.
