This morning at a networking meeting I asked for someone's card and they said "I only give my card to people if they set an appointment." To be frank, this got my attention! I stopped a moment, remembered that she said (during the meeting's round of introductions) that her first appointment was free and so I proceeded to set an appointment with her. Now I know this might not work with most businesses, and it might not work for certain personality types, but I can report that the technique was both jarring and effective. Food for thought, I thought. And worth sharing.

PS - perhaps it could be modified to something like "I only give my card to people who set a 'coffee appointment' with me.
