VR demos and snacks

Hi VR Pioneers!
Thank you for joining! Our next meetup covers one of the hottest new technologies that is destined to revolutionize VR "Oculus Rift".

"I’ve seen five or six demos that made me think the world was about to change: Apple II, Netscape, Google, iPhone … then Oculus."
- Chris Dixon

The idea for this first meetup is that, with help from VR pioneers with Oculus DK1 or/and DK2, we will set up a few demos and experiences to share with members that haven't experienced it yet and talk about the present and future of VR.

Address:

1515 N Courthouse Rd, 7th Floor

Arlington, VA 22201 USA (map)

The parking garage in the building closes at 10PM. If they are unable to find space, here is a link to overflow parking options near the office

When you arrive - take the elevator to the 7th floor and an Oployee will be there to greet you.

The agenda:

6:30 - Meet & Greet <=> Snacks & Beer

6:45 - Welcome and introduction to #VRDC

7:00 - Demos

- Social Tables is the global leader of cloud-based hospitality software that positions venues to work more collaboratively and efficiently with their event and meeting customers.

More than 30,000 unique users rely on the desktop and mobile product line, which includes online sales and marketing solutions, 2D and 3D room diagramming, business intelligence for hotels, and event attendee management. Users have planned over 175,000 events within the company’s Venue Library, home to over 220-million square feet of meeting space.

Social Tables was founded in Washington, D.C. in 2011 by Dan Berger, and has received a total of $9.6 million in funding.

Sijie Tian will demostrate Social Table VR. It is an experimental new product inspired by Google Cardboard. This product uses the Social Tables API along with WebGL, phone sensors, and a Google Cardboard to let anyone explore physical meeting spaces in virtual reality.

VisiSonics is a spinout from the University of Maryland’s Computer Science Department.  They have created several technologies for gaming and VR.  The most exciting one is their ability to create sound with pinpoint accuracy anywhere in space…with stereo headsets.  It’s called “RealSpace 3D Audio” for VR and Gaming.  Gregg Wilkes and team will be on hand to give us a brief presentation on it’s origin as well as stick around to provide live demonstrations of the technology.  It is available today for the Unity Gaming Engine for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android.   Additionally, VisiSonics has a full 8” Spherical Array with 64 Microphones and 5 HD camera’s that can capture video and audio in 360 degrees simultaneously.  They will be able to “demonstrate” Virtual Presence through an Oculus Rift DK1.

7:30 - Hands on with Oculus Rift (DK1 & DK2) and Google Cardboard. All the attendees will be able to try the devices and some experiences that we will have ready for you.

Opower’s engineering team is our host and sponsor this month – special thanks to Chrissy Glover and John Crimmins for coordinating! You can learn all about Opower here.

Survey completed and looking forward to the next meetup! Already have ideas for apps and am very excited to use some of the stuff we learned at the meetup.

In that vein, some folks expressed interest in the meetup that my brother recently took over. Our first meeting is next week, Sept 18, in Gaithersburg, MD. The meetup is for Android Developers and we'll be talking about our experience working with the sensors in android devices while developing our first app.

    Hope to see you there!

Thanks Gregg for the beta download. And great meeting you as well. Group question? Are any of the other demos available for download?

Awesome meetup. I'm excited for what's to come. My suggestions would be to use a vr launcher for people to explore more demos conveniently and it would be cool to have a VR themed hackathon sometime :)

We ought to do this more often! Great conversation and enthusiasm for the revolution. Would love to see VR have its own dedicated space, the beginning is near.

Folks, on behalf of VisiSonics we are grateful for the time you spent experiencing our 3D Audio demo. For the developers in the audience, you can download a free beta at www.realspace3daudio.com Where hearing is believing...

That was even better than I expected.

I very much enjoyed this meetup! What can go wrong with pizza, beer and VR? I loved hearing from other VR enthusiast and developers and seeing first-hand what type of work they were doing. The fact that I finally got to try out the DK2 was the icing on the cake.

Hey guys, running extremely late. I got held up at the office but I will be there.

    I'm super excited about tonight.

Alas, I can't make it. My wife is pretty sick, so I'll be home taking care of her. Which means that'll be one less DK1 and DK2 for the meetup :(

    September 7

    • Jason G.

Of course, completely understandable. I hope she feels better and I look forward to seeing you at future meetups!

  • Sean T. M.

I'll have my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, an ersatz Google Cardboard, and a smorgasboard of JS code I've been writing and curating to be able to easily make WebGL VR apps.

Awesome! That would be amazing! Thanks!

Doh, wife has a meeting that night. I'll have to miss it. :(

    September 4

    • Juan Pablo R.

Thanks for letting us now :) Does any other day of the week work better for you or only weekends?

      September 5

    • Lance

You are so kind for asking. Actually, Mondays and the weekend are worst for me. But my schedule is so erratic that you should not consider accommodating me. Thank you though.

      September 6

  • Sean T. M.

If anyone has the intestinal fortitude to wade through my madly-banging-hammers-together style of programming, perhaps some of my code here can help you also slap together a quick VR demo for smartphone-oriented HMDs. https://plus.google.com/10028296...

(also, if you didn't know about the Google Cardboard VR group on G+, now you do)

A more comprehensive write-up and UX will be ready for the meetup.

Cool indeed. Sadly, I'm only getting blackness on my S3.

Hey all, I know we're focusing on the OR and GC, anyone interested in or also getting the CastAR soon? Should be getting mine in Sept-Oct.

    1 · August 12

    • Jason G.

Definitely interested! We want people to be able to try out as many VR experiences as possible. Thank you! I'm excited to see how CastAR stacks up.

      August 13

    • Peter S.

Awesome, I'll certainly bring it to the next event after it arrives.

      1 · August 13

  • Ivan M

I am hoping that the Google Cardboard kit from dodocase.com shows up soon. VR for $30 with a smartphone!

    2 · August 11

    • Dan E.

I am going to have to whip up one of those soon using the spare lens from my DK1. I am trying like hell not to get a DK2 and hold out for the commecial release.

      1 · August 12

    • Sean T. M.

I've read recently that the DK2 uses the same display module as the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which is lucky as that is the phone I have.

      August 12

  • Dave B.

Haven't tried Oculus. Looking forward to it!

    1 · August 11

  • Ryan M.

    I can bring my DK2.

    1 · August 11

  • Cory C.

I should be getting my DK2 this month, but I'm anticipating it not arriving until early September. Sold my DK1 to upgrade! Either way, I'll be there!

    1 · August 11

  • Noah C.

    I can't freaking wait!

    July 10

    • Juan Pablo R.

Hi Noah, Any chance you can also bring some of the devices you have? It would be amazing if we can have as many stations as we can so everyone can try it comfortably. Thanks a lot! Juan

Sound very interesting, but 9/1 falls on Labor Day.
