Hi, I'm Lance, I'm your host and Virtuous Bicycle's lead instructor. I love cycling and I love New York. I believe city cycling can be stress free when approached with some solid skills, some basic knowledge, and the right frame of mind.
Ha! This is going to take some time! Cycling has been part of my life since I was a child. As a teen in Queens NY, my friends and I ranged wide traveling all over Long Island. In the 1980's my wife and I lead tours every weekend in New England, even leading groups to Ireland and China! I've ridden in 8 countries on 4 continents. At this point, my focus is on safe, courteous, legal city riding technique. I do not view a motor vehicle driver as the enemy. They are my fellow road users and, I find, when I treat them with the consideration they deserve, the respect is returned to me. I have few conflicts, no one honks at me, and I arrive home invigorated and relaxed. My passion is to impart this spirit, along with some real-world skills to my fellow cyclists.
My goal is to help my students achieve theirs - I will be successful if I can get you moving on the virtuous cycle of - riding more - learning more - enjoying cycling more. Riding in the park, riding the city's bike paths, or commuting where ever you need to go, if you are able to do these things, I will consider the Virtuous Bicycle to have been successful.
In an ideal world, I would ride my bike amongst other cyclists who are skillful, confident, and who demonstrate knowledgable, courteous, and legal road technique.
