Vegan Book Club - April

This month's book is Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain by
Oliver Sacks. It is described on Amazon as:

Oliver Sacks’s compassionate, compelling tales of people struggling to adapt to different neurological conditions have fundamentally changed the way we think of our own brains, and of the human experience. In Musicophilia, he examines the powers of music through the individual experiences of patients, musicians, and everyday people—from a man who is struck by lightning and suddenly inspired to become a pianist at the age of forty-two, to an entire group of children with Williams syndrome, who are hypermusical from birth; from people with “amusia,” to whom a symphony sounds like the clattering of pots and pans, to a man whose memory spans only seven seconds—for everything but music.

As always, you can go to the VBC website (http://veganbookclub.com) and suggest/vote for books you want to read for upcoming discussions. If you suggest the book that gets selected, you plan the meetup :)

Because I can't be the only one who was intrigued. Although...TWO CUPS of sugar??? Really? Surely that can't all be necessary.

Two cups is a bit much, I agree. Part of it is to cut the lemon juice (which I also reduced a little). I ended up using about a cup (maybe a hair more, I didn't actually measure).

Well, I've got it in my crockpot right now (so I will be up all night, apparently), so we'll see how I like it. I used about[masked] cups of sugar; I just couldn't bring myself to put the full 2 cups in.

Also, we didn't announce it at our meetup, but the book for June will be Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. This was suggested by Karen Brokken, so she'll be responsible for setting up the meeting time/location. In the meantime, I've put a tentative date of 6/16/2013 for the book on the website so that it shows as a selected book, but that is liable to change once Karen sets up the meeting.

Good discussions, and some of the conversation was even about the book! =)

Oops! I was just about to head out to catch the bus to White Owl. Not going to make it on time to Sweet Hereafter. Enjoy a Bahn Mi for me! Until next time.

Bike still isn't ready so I am probably not going to make it. I'm not sure what exactly they are doing that is taking so long when it was supposed to be done yesterday.

Yikes. It looks like White Owl changed their hours and won't be open until 3pm today. Sorry for the late venue change, but we'll now be meeting at Sweet Hereafter.

Oops, sorry for the accidental spam; I didn't realize Meetup had changed RSVP comments to Meetup comments. Nice of them to let group organizers know...

Just a reminder that although we welcome people in all different veg or veg curious stages, because we are a vegan group we request you consume only vegan items when you are at some of our specified vegan events, such as book club. Thanks for understanding.

As usual, I have found a digital copy of the book for those who need it. It's a .pdf this time instead of a .epub, but hopefully it should be just as useful for most of you. If you would like a copy of the pdf, send me an email to mike at mikefenwick dot com and I'll be happy to pass it along. I'm also setting up a list of people to whom I'll send digital copies (subject to my availability of course) automatically each month rather than making you email each time. If you want on the list, let me know in the email as well.
