Be it live-band / conventional karaoke or most regular open mic nights, there seem to be opportunities a-plenty for singers of pop, rock, and R&B to get their mic-on in front of an audience. But for singers of Broadway or Jazz music, the options are far slimmer.
So, for all of you singers with a craving to croon Jazz Standards or belt Broadway/Cabaret songs (not to mention Pop, Rock, or R&B), join us for our next event,
Piano Bar CABARET / JAZZ / POP / R&B Open Mic
We'll be at Duplex, which tends to get very busy as it gets later in the eve…so we'll arrive by 9pm , well BEFORE the room packs out. We'll practically have the place to ourselves, so we'll all get on the list early, and everyone in our group will get a chance to sing right away…usually at least twice. The staff and piano accompanist expect us, and make it a special point to accommodate us.
The seasoned accompanist we'll be using has an encyclopedic knowledge of classic Jazz and Broadway music, plus Pop, Rock, and R&B, and he's an exceptional sight-reader. If you can bring a chord chart or sheet music for the song(s) you want to sing, there's a good chance he'll be able to pick it up and accompany you beautifully.
*** If you have sheet music or a chart for an obscure song you don't think he'll know, message the organizer of the event ahead of time with a link of the song on the internet (You Tube, Google Video, Vimeo, etc.), and we can send it to the accompanist so he can give it a listen ahead of time.
He is also usually able to transpose keys on the spot if a song is a little bit too high or low in register for a particular singer.
If you're not sure what you want to sing, come anyway! The accompanist also has tons of his own sheet music; he literally has boxes and shelves filled with over a hundred books of music from all styles and eras, so there are plenty of songs from artists and musicals, old and new, to choose from. The pianist can usually play most anything you put in front of him, and there's no rule that says it needs to be Jazz or Broadway-based. And many of his music books are pop-based.
Or, just join us for a drink and listen if you're not ready to get up and sing yourself. Check it out today, and maybe sing next time, if you find the courage. You're welcome, no matter what.
Admission is free! There is only a two-drink minimum (and make sure you tip the player & wait-staff). The place is tons of fun, and the people are fantastic. Join us!
See you all soon! (:
