San Francisco - Feed the Homeless on the Streets

  • Jul 25, 2014 · 7:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

**IMPORTANT NOTE:  Management has changed at The Sanctuary, and we are currently trying  to work out a new agreement with them.  Because of that, we cannot meet in parking lot at the Sanctuary, so please park on the street.   I have listed 7:45pm as the start time but we will not head out on the streets until 8pm.  Please call me at[masked] if you are lost or need to find us.

Time for another service project on the streets of San Francisco.  We will be going around the City at night, passing out food and clothing to the homeless.  This is a completely self-contained project, which means everything must be provided & carried by ourselves.  [At this time, we have no MSG--aka, Mobile Soup Gadget, so lease let us know in the comments if you have a wagon you can bring to carry soup or extra items in.]

Here is the plan:

If you want to test your latest cooking creation, you will have a grand audience here.  Go crazy and make something you wish to share with the world.

If you need to heat anything, please arrive 7:30pm, and you can use the kitchen or our camper here.  You will need your own pot, and your items must already be prepared (we can only use the kitchen for heating). Soup is a wonderful thing to bring this time of year, but please consider how you will carry it, and if you need someone else to provide cups or spoons, let us know in the comments.

Other Food Suggestions:  Pre-made goodies from the supermarket; ready-made sandwiches are also well-received; fruits; bottled drinks.  These items are easily transportable, but you can bring whatever you'd like.

If you have socks, toiletries, old clothing, blankets, backpacks, sleeping bag, or anything else you have to donate, you can bring those.  Clean white socks are the most desired clothing item and toothbrush/paste is most desired toiletry.

If you don't need to heat anything, meet us in the parking lot of the facility at 8pm.  We will then head out on a tour of San Francisco!

Please indicate in your RSVP what you plan to bring. If you are just able to donate your company, that is equally good.  Please come along, socialize, and help!

Thanks every one for bringing friends and for all our effort & donations! Hope you all had a good time. Halfway through the night we split the group, and I think that ended up worked out really well, because Elena & Jazziel got to go at the pace & direction they wanted, and it was easier for us to give stuff out when we were in the smaller group. We found an area on Leavenworth that was great because there were several homeless camping out on the sides of the street there. I think I was most affected by the man in the Civic Center who was very disabled and hunched over (we saw a couple in wheelchairs as well)...I think no one should have to live their lives with that much suffering. Thanks to every one for helping make a difference!!

It is hard to predict what one finds but I think we did pretty well as we were able to reach some of the people that prefer not to hang out in groups and would normally miss out. The colleague who left the toiletries in my office read my thank you note and reached out to give me some more. There were a few people asking for medicated body lotion and lots of people asking for sandwiches so we know what to bring next time.

Hey Every One: Lorenzo & Cinzia will not be here this Friday but they'll have a couple of friends coming in their place. This may be our first time without a man present, so if you think you'd feel more comfortable with a man there, please feel free to invite a friend (male or female because in any case we could always use the extra help). I'll bring my usual bananas and various clothing items including socks. Looking forward :)

Thanks, Elena! Never had a delay over the Bay Bridge coming there on a Friday night, but you never know... The game starts at 7:15pm so hopefully the worse of the traffic will have already happened by the time we're heading over.

Here is what I have in addition to the small toiletries: 6 toothbrushes with toothpaste (If u have a safeway card they have an offer) , 6 women socks and 6 man socks. Small bottles of water, oats bar and some Ritz type biscuits with filling. I still have a bit of frozen shoulder so I might need some help carrying stuff around.
