On July 27th in South Lake Union Park, Seattle, we are holding a dragon boat race with 44 teams (approximately 900 paddlers), primarily from Washington, Canada and Oregon. A dragon boat is sort of a 50 foot canoe, historically made in China's southern Guangdong Province out of teak wood. It is one of a family of Traditional Paddled Long Boats found throughout Asia, Africa, and the Pacific Islands. Dragon boats are the basis of the team paddling sport of dragon boat racing, an amateur watersport which has its roots in an ancient folk ritual. While 'competition' has taken place annually for more than 20 centuries as part of religious ceremonies and folk customs, dragon boat racing has emerged in modern times as an international sport, beginning in Hong Kong in 1976. I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
