WAcreative NonCon13

  • November 7, 2013 · 6:30 PM

This is the big one of 2013!  To celebrate our third birthday and as part of the Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival we're bringing back the NonCon and are joined by a great set of speakers.  It's like a regular meetup, but bigger and with a decidedly contemporary feel this year.  We've lined up a great range of speakers from an eclectic slice of the creative industries.

Joining us on the night will be:

Mia Bennett (CEO, Turned On Digital)

Mia is a startup founder and producer. She founded and is the CEO of Turned On Digital, a mobile services agency based in London and Manchester. Mia's work has been featured in the Talk to Me book, WIRED magazine, the Guardian, TheNextWeb and FastCompany amongst many others. Mia also co-founded an app market in Middle East and is the producer of a massive multiplayer online mobile game, launching soon in Middle East and Asia.

Chris Tangye (Senior Product Manager, BBC iPlayer)
Chris Tangye is a Product Manager for BBC Future Media. He looks after something called iPlayer. After a successful career in acting at home in his native Australia, culminating in a (potentially) award-winning campaign for Kellogg's, he moved to the UK to achieve international fame. Now, in Manchester, he has achieved just that. For the first time ever, he'll be sharing some of his tips and talking about how iPlayer has developed and where its going.

Farooq Ansari
Farooq is a digital strategist and consultant, with particular expertise across UX, digital strategy, social strategy and content production. He has worked in the digital sphere in a wide range of organisations ranging including the BBC, Zodiak Media and Reading Room focusing on business development, strategy and production.

And, for the first time, we'll be giving the creative industries a bit of a thrashing with a live panel debate on how things are holding up in the world of all things creative in the north-west.  You'll have the opportunity to ask questions and give people a general grilling.  Which is always fun!  Joining the panel will be...

Katy Cowan (Managing Director, Boomerang & blogger, CreativeBoom)
Katy is a trained broadcast journalist who started her career writing and reading the news for a number of regional and national radio stations before jumping ship into the world of PR. After making headlines for her clients at one of the UK's leading PR firms, which included Google and United Co-operatives, she went freelance and Boomerang was born in 2007. Today, her agency is based in Manchester and has clients across the globe, including BBC, TATA and Jaguar. During her spare time she loves to help others through her popular blog Creative Boom. Now attracting over 300,000 unique monthly visitors, it was recently dubbed the 'most important website for the UK creative industries' during a visit to Number 10.

Tj Cosgrove (Owner, Explosivo)
Tj is the Director & Owner of Explosivo Ltd, a nifty wee Creative Studio based in the North West. Tj is a filmmaker, entrepreneur and designer hailing from the island of Ireland, with a love of zombies, caffeinated beverages, expensive cameras and making movies.

Maureen Banner (Chair, Culture Warrington)
Maureen is chair of the board at Culture Warrington. As a retired teacher, she has retained a keen interest in education and is passionately committed to early years’ education, both as chair of governors for the only statutory nursery school in Warrington and as chair of the Schools’ Forum.

Dave Hartill (Managing Director, FuzzyDuck)
Dave's working life began in 1995 and whilst his job has changed from illustrator to rugby player to visualiser to bouncer to graphic designer to writer to animator to film director to creative director to managing director, he uses many of the wide-ranging skills he has picked up. The work Fuzzy Duck does today is for vastly different clients such as The Tower of London, Manchester United, NHS, United Utilities and Warrington Wolves.

Doors open from 6.30pm with the chance to grab a drink and then a 7pm start!  Free parking is available at Pyramid, Museum St and Palmyra Square.  And for those coming by bus/train, we're just 2 minutes from Warrington Bank Quay, 10 minutes from Central and 10 minutes from Warrington Interchange.  Easy!

If you are based in Warrington and are involved in the creative industry, get yourself down there. Our agenda for the evening is to try and shake things up a little bit in the town's creative scene and hopefully inspire a few people along the way.

Hi guys, I'm looking to get in contact with any web designers that may be there on Thursday. So if any designers are up for having a chat, come introduce yourself :) cheers!

Hi, the event looks great! Just wondering if anyone could recommend parking nearby? (I'm new to Warrington!)

Also, if anyone needs a lift from the Thelwall area, let me know :)

Hi Stephanie - Free parking is available at Pyramid, Museum St and Palmyra Square. I'd recommend aiming for Pyramid car park if you can, there should be plenty of space. WA1 1BL should get you close :)#

Regret I can't be there - last year's was a really good event and it looks like this year's will be at least as good. I'll be at the Student Radio Association Awards at the O2 where two of our programmes are shortlisted.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
