Hike to Devil's Courthouse

  • Sep 14, 2013 · 9:30 AM

Easy to moderate, 5 mile, in-and-out hike in the Black Balsam area with great views to the south from Devil’s Courthouse. We will follow the Mountains to Sea Trail (MST) to the Devil’s Courthouse Connecter and cross over the Blue Ridge Parkway. The ascent to Devil’s Courthouse is steep but short. Wear sturdy shoes, bring rain gear, water and a lunch or snack. Meet in Asheville at 9:30 am and return about 5:00 pm. RSVP to hike leader (Jane) at [masked] or[masked]-0379.

Friendly group of folks and good hikers, too. Sky cleared up and we had good views from Devil's Courthouse.

Jane ... thanks for the scouting reports. I've hiked some pretty rocky trails and they're not my favorite. I'm going to miss this hike but look forward to being with the group again soon.

I scouted this hike on Saturday and found the trail to be rocky, full of roots and narrow in most places. Although there is not much elevation gain until the end, footing is tricky on the way to Devil's Courthouse. I recommend hiking boots and a pole or two.

Travel time to the trail head is about an hour, so I moved up the meeting time to 9:30 am. We were socked in with clouds and fog and did not have a view on Saturday. Hopefully, this Saturday will be cool and clear!

If you have any doubts about your ability to do this hike, please e-mail or call me. We will go at a moderate pace and take breaks, but it would not be fair to the rest of the group if you could not keep up. My contact info is above.

That's a great hike, but I have to be out of town that week. Y'all have fun!
