CATARACT FALLS AND STEEP RAVINE LOOP HIKE: 13+ MILES, 3,000'+Elv. Gain

HIKE DETAILS AND DESCRIPTION: As far as hiking on the California coast is concerned, the Dipsea / Steep Ravine / Matt Davis trail loop may be the best. Tremendous ocean views, and a rushing creek down a mountain side through a beautiful forest. We will begin our journey from Alpine Lake hiking up Cataract Falls Trail, alongside numerous waterfalls gushing with water from our recent rainfall up to the Pantoll Ranger Station. From there we will head down to Stinson beach via Steep Ravine and Dipsea, and finally looping back on the Matt Davis and Coastal Trail. This will be the perfect hike for viewing some amazing waterfalls and lush green forestsbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

WHO CAN ATTEND: Only FIT GROUP MEMBERS are permitted to attend.

START TIME: 9:00 AM. Parking at the trailhead is very limited so carpooling is highly recommended. I can pick up four peeps in my truck at Castro Valley BART. Email me for ride. Please allow plenty of time for parking and to sign in for hike.

DIFFICULTY: strenuous due to distance and elevation gain.

ESTIMATED TIME AND PACE: Hike will last anywhere from 6 to 8 hours keeping a 2 to 3mph pace. NOTE: This hike is a GROUP EFFORT!! That means no one will be permitted to get ahead of the group or go off on their own. The only pace allowed on this hike is the pace of the ORGANIZER. If you think you will have a problem with this DO NOT SIGN UP!! biggrin

PRIOR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Experience hiking 10-15 miles at a 2.5 to 3mph pace with substantial elevation gain is required. If you have not hiked 10-15 miles in the last couple months, DO NOT SIGN UP!

MEETING TIME AND LOCATION: We will meet at the Cataract Falls Trailhead just off Fairfax Rd. Once you cross the dam look for a small roadside area to park in just before the big hairpin turn. Trailhead will be on the left side. Nearest mile marker is 8.13mi. http://maps.google.co...

GEAR TALK: Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, appropriate clothing, and HEAD LAMP!!! don't forget to bring your head lamp as this hike could end in the dark. The current forecast calls for rain so bring rain gear!!! Our lunch break will be at Stinson Beach. There is an outside cafe that serves burgers and other stuff to eat. I plan on ordering my lunch there. We will most likely be eating under the gazebos or on the beach.

Optional After Hike Meetup:
I plan on stopping at Iron Springs Pub in Fairfax to grab a beer and some fries after the hike. You are welcome to join mebiggrin

What an amazing, amazing hike! Cataract Falls was gushing and gorgeous; lunch on the beach was a perfect midway break; the foggy coastal hillsides felt otherworldly. Thanks so much to Tricia for organizing such a memorable adventure!

Wonderful hike. The waterfalls were gorgeous and it was great exercise. It was quite an adventure with climbing, jumping and crossing streams. We went through lots of different types of weather: rainy, sunny, and foggy. I only wish I'd brought a camera. =)

Great hike and great job Tricia. We had a little sun a little rain and everything in between. And not to forget the experienced group of hikers, we all made it across the creek with no one slipping in the drink. ;)
