DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS FOR SIMULATION MODELING Dr. Averill Law

We are pleased to present one of our most popular speakers, who is back in town for a training session (for Dr. Law's full training program in DC, please see his website at http://www.averill-law.com/) There is no cost for the WINFORMS session, but RSVPs are firm and required since we expect to exceed location capacity of 75.

Simulation models often have many input factors, and determining which ones have a significant impact on performance measures (responses) of interest can be a difficult task.  The common approach of changing one factor at a time is statistically inefficient and, more importantly, is very often just incorrect, because for many models factors interact to impact on the responses.  In this talk we present an introduction to design of experiments specifically for simulation modeling, whose major goal is to determine the important factors with the least amount of simulating.  We briefly discuss classical experimental designs such as full factorial and fractional factorial, followed by a presentation on space-filling designs, which are designed for the complex, nonlinear responses typically associated with simulation models.

Dr. Averill M. Law is President of Averill M. Law & Associates, a company specializing in simulation training, consulting, and software.  Previously, he was a tenured faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Arizona.  He has a Ph.D. in operations research from the University of California at Berkeley.  He was awarded the 2009 INFORMS Simulation Society Lifetime Professional Achievement Award. Dr. Law is the author of numerous papers and books on simulation, operations research, and statistics, including the textbook Simulation Modeling and Analysis. There are more than 150,000 copies of the book in print and it has been cited more than 13,500 times according to Google Scholar. The fifth edition was published by McGraw-Hill in January 2014. He has presented more than 525 simulation and statistics short courses in 19 countries, including onsite seminars for Boeing, Booz Allen & Hamilton, Lockheed Martin, MITRE, NASA, NATO, NSA, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, and U.S. Navy.

I was really looking forward to attending this meeting. Since I rely on a long-winded public transport route, traveling in bad weather conditions is difficult. I won't be able to make it today. Sorry for the last minute cancellation.
