WNYMBA - Allegany State Park Trail Building WEEKEND!

Trail building at ASP begins! We will start work on the Ridge Run singletrack, a 2-mile loop off the Ridge Run XC ski trail.

Unlike E-ville, trail building in ASP is more remote, and getting there takes longer from Buffalo (but shorter from Bradford, Olean, and Warren, hint..hint). So here are the details about what is going on:

The project is to build new singletrack off of Ridge Run.  This will be the first (and easiest) of three new trails we have approval for.  The location for this new trail is dictated by the topography, and the only ridge in this area that doesn’t already have a trail on it is a couple of miles out on Ridge Run.  That means doing things a little differently.

Tools: The tools will be transported to near the work area by the park using their off road vehicle.  They will be transported out there Saturday morning, and won’t be coming back until Sunday night.

Food: We will be providing lunch *on the trail* both Saturday and Sunday.  This will allow us to continue working through the day.  We will be way “out there” and want to make the most of the effort to get where we are working.  WNYMBA will also be providing Saturday Night Dinner, although we will take voluntary contributions to help defray the costs.

You: With the tools and food shuttled to the work area, the best way for you to get to the new singletrack in on your bike.  Since you will be working in the woods, you probably want to dress in “civilian” clothes, and probably pedal out on flat pedals with boots (or bring your boots in a backpack).  This will allow you to head back to the cabin at your own pace if you need to.  Because of the late date of snow melting (probably still snow there as I type this), the park cannot allow other vehicles to drive to work site.  If the weather is looking bad, we will try to get some pop-ups shuttled out there for a place to be out of the weather.  Bring appropriate clothes (jackets, etc.) to be comfortable for staying in the woods most of the day.

Dates/Times: We will work both Saturday and Sunday.  Because we have lots of work to do, and because we will be staying at the Summit Cabins, we will start early – heading out on the bikes at 9 AM to start swinging the pulaskis by 9:30.  If you are driving down from Buffalo and can’t get up that early, we will have some signs as to where to go meet us, so don’t skip just because you have Friday night plans and can’t get up early Saturday.  You can work one or both days.

Lodging in the Cabins:**UPDATE** TJ from wnymba has cabin details via Jon and will be at the Summit Cabins 1, 2, 3 with keys for anyone coming down tonight by no later than 7pm. email TJ at [masked] if you are friday night camping. *very important*:  If you want to stay overnight in the cabins, you have to let us know ahead of time.  You can do this either by e-mailing me at [masked] or clicking the RSVP here on the meetup page.  We hope to have lots of people, so we want to make sure we aren’t overbooking!  If you are staying overnight, bring some warm clothes and a sleeping bag.

This is going to be a lot of fun!

Hmmm,... this sounds interesting. Saturday is out for me and if I can get all my chores done on Saturday, I may have to finagle my current plans for Sunday. The weather is forecasting all goodness... (for Sunday anyhow... not so much for Saturday) So if I can make it,... and I get to the Summit Cabin Loop or the Summit Trailhead, it sounds like there will be directions to find out where you are working.?
Is this correct and will they be posted somewhere obvious??

Still don't have the details as to what time cabins open on Friday night. Will post that soon.

WNYMBA provides lunches on Sat. and Sun. and will be grilling up hamburgers and hot dogs (and some sides) for Sat. dinner. Breakfast will be on your own, although I'll have a coleman stove for people who want to cook up some coffee.

is anyone riding this weekend? ie the fire roads etc? what is the condition this time of year? is it worth bringing a bike? is anyone else bringing a bike just in case? weather looks decent but not super warm.

certainly bring your bike, or else you will have a long walk out to the work site... toss on flats if you have them.

I can make it - but not by 9am on Sat morning. Should be easy to find the work location, tho. I'll like a cabin space too.
