UPDATE: Frozen temps this morning. Due to icy conditions, the walk has been DELAYED until 10 a.m. There are many frozen patches on trails and at intersections this morning, making walking & driving potentially hazardous. Let's give the thin ice on the trails a chance to melt! I will send out an email to everyone who RSVP'd. Erla[masked]
Join me for a morning birdwalk on at Lake Lynn, 7921 Ray Road entrance, SUNDAY, February 16, 2014,
NEW TIME is 10 a.m. to approximately 11:30 A.M. (due to early morning icy conditions and snow moving through the area.
NOTE: We may have to cancel if the park is flooded. Most of the other state/county parks are closed due to flooding and muddy trails, but Lake Lynn's trails are mostly elevated boardwalks.
Leader: L. Erla. Beegle,[masked] [masked]
Meet at the Ray Road parking lot for Lake Lynn Community Park (address is below; meet in the LOWEST PARK of the parking lot). We will walk around Lake Lynn once (2 miles, oval-shaped loop. mostly flat, all paved or boardwalk, can see the lake the whole time). Birds at Lake Lynn tend to be quite tame due to all the weekend pedestrians, so expect some great close-ups. Good spot for waterfowl if the conditions are right.
NOTE: If you miss us, follow the main trail to the lake, and when you get to the lake, walk COUNTER-clockwise around the lake; you will catch up to us. I don't know if we will go all the way around the lake, or if we will re-trace our steps.
My cell phone number is[masked] if you are running late.
Bathrooms might not be open at the start of the walk, but they should be open at the end. They are located in a large building next to the parking lot.
Binoculars are recommended if you have them. I will be happy to help any beginners in spotting and identifying birds. I have a pair of binoculars that you can borrow.
Directions: Lake Lynn Park and Community Center, 7921 Ray Road, Raleigh, NC, 27613
NOTE: We are NOT meeting in the small parking lot on Lynn Road (it's too noisy from the road traffic and it is dangerous to pull out of there onto Lynn Road).
We will meet in the MAIN parking lot for Lake Lynn, which is at 7921 Ray Road. Park in the lowest part of the parking lot near the trailhead to find our group.
Ray Road is on Lynn Road, east of Leesville Road and west of Creedmoor Road. Turn north on Ray Road from Lynn Road. The park entrance is hard to spot; it is on the west (left) side of Ray Road, after you pass Howard Road on your right. If you come to Strickland Road, you've gone too far.
Hope you can join me!
