Buffalo River at the harbor. Hamburg street a lunch
The creek is pretty scummy right now.

For those of us without a Kayak-on the canal in Tonawanda they rent them-not sure when the new season starts though.

When you go out in the water there is always the possibility of tipping over, Getting dirty when loading in and out. Goose poo. If you bring dogs with you it is best that they have been trained to sit in the canoe and behave. Now matter where you go have fun.

Buffalo River Urban Canoe Trail, where the banks are dotted with abandoned grain elevators, steel recycling yards and oil refineries--all reminders of Buffalo's industrial heyday in the 1920s and 1930s

OK, so I went to a meet up where some people hiked and some were in Kayaks and I though "that looks like so much fun"....so I am game, count me in....:)

I agree on the terrain, I wasn't so much worried about me but more concerned about Bailey. OMG what would I do if this fun thing I was doing with her ended up her slipping into the rock and breaking a leg. A Kayak I could put her in. Did you have fun in Ellicott Creek? I really would like to learn to do this....didn't think until I seen it up close.

I'm not sure Bella would stay in the kayak. I've had my kayak for a couple years and love it. We launched at Memorial Park which was a nice easy launch. Water was only really dirty in one area. I sure wouldn't want to tip over there :)

I've went once at peaks & paddles on ellicott creek and it was nice & smooth (although I was somewhat a clutz I eventually caught on). Would do it again or dowtwn at the water front rents then as well. that might be fun too.

tonawanda is a perfect spot for me. i have an inflatable boat. its sort of slow but nice. i'm getting a "real" kayak soon. so im not always the last one in line. the kayak people are soooo very nice. .thye are always there to help

      June 14, 2013

  • Jeff C

Wilson sounds good to me !!!!well get you hooked up Nancy Jo..you'll be a paddling maniac lol are you from the south ? just
    saying !!!! lol

    June 13, 2013

  • maryann k.

I'm definitely down with this. I like the canals in tonawanda and north tonawanda. i like relaxing paddles. the ellicott creek was pretty dirty and smelly last night but the canals open to the river.
lake ontario around wilson is nice too.

    June 13, 2013

    • nancy j.

ok, well I definitely defer to the experienced. I am also looking for relaxing paddles. Only time I went people initially had to stop & wait on me. As soon as I caught up, they took off. where was my rest? lol

very interested. i have an inflatable so i'm interested in flat water relaxing runs. I have a lot to learn but i did the Paddles up Niagara last year and plan to run it this year.
i like Maryann's idea of going to places that have rentals. although i love my Sea eagle it doesn't glide along like the hard shells.

    May 21, 2013

  • Mary Ann G

me too. I would love to go where there are rentals. I saw one in Wilson the other day. Tuesday/Thursday evenings and i thought it was only $15

    May 14, 2013

  • Beth

Would be very interested but will only have 2 lessons in kayaking and don't own a kayak. If there would be a place near the meet-ups where I could rent one I would be very interested as long as I wouldn't be holding this group back being a newbie.
