Walk Steiglmeier Park, Cheektowaga NY

Want to put those New Years resolutions into practice?

Let's meet at shelter #10 up by Cayuga Creek. Enter at Losson Rd, make a left, drive past the playing fields and through the park until you come to one of the last shelters. The trail is more interesting up by the creek.

Cecelia and Rich, I think alot of the people we met on Sunday would like to go on future walks. I hope you try scheduling a few meetups this winter...theres nothing to copying a past meetup. The descriptions and maps are already in the system. Here are a list of good Erie County parks we walked last fall. Have fun!! http://www2.erie.gov/health/index.php?q=be-active-erie-county-walks

Tillman is good but the trails are open to the wind ; for just walking there's the Lancaster historic trail - might tend to get icy because it's totally flat and asphalt.

Another 'flat hike" is Tillman Marsh. That's located at Wherle and Shisler out in Clarence. Like Steiglmeir, it's a meandering path with boardwalks and trails.

Good weather for a walk, would have liked to meet more of the walkers; maybe next time. Rich, thanks for the info on the snow treads!

Great walk today! I really enjoyed the exercise and chatting with everyone I met. Weather was perfect for this time of year, and it was really cool to see the deer and hearing the wild turkeys. Looking forward to the next meetup.

Good walk. Pace gave one a decent workout but didn't leave ya feeling like you wanted to camp out on the couch the rest of the day (my dog was waiting and would have none of that..we had his mid day walk to do) For those who love feeding the birds by hand, Tift Nature Preserve is the place to go.:o) Matter of fact,Tift and then a walk down to the light house might be a nice option come spring.(?) As the mini parks are completed an Ohio St. parks walk might be another option.

Enjoyed the invigorating walk and good convefsation with nice folks who also enjoy the outdoors. Seeing a chicadee eat from someones hand and seeing the deer calmly watching us was also special.

Beautiful day...lots of new people. We had a great walk and enjoyed meeting everyone. I've never seen the parking lot so full of cars. It was an excellent turnout.

Trying to upload a photo, how?

If you click on the Stiglmeier Park meetup, you will see an upload button to the right of the date and time. Click on that and you'll see how to chose your photos and upload them. Thanks, Cecelia.

How long? How fast a hike?

    1 · January 4, 2014

    • Mary D.

Usually 1 to 1 1/4 hour at varied pace. The weather channel is predicting only 10% chance of snow but cold.

      January 4, 2014

  • Mary D.

The weather's looking good for Sunday. Might be light snow but that's the beauty of winter. Winds won't be a problem according to the weather channel. Hope to see everyone at Stiglmeier Park!! Check Meetup Sunday morning before you head out to make sure the walk is still on. And if you have any doubt about how to find shelter #10, post your question and I'll be happy to explain further.

    January 2, 2014

    • marie aka t.

Hi Mary, how long and how fast is the pace.

      January 4, 2014

    • Mary D.

We usually walk for 60-75 minutes, and the pace is varied. You'll find that half of the group like to walk at a faster pace and the rest at a less strenuous pace. Footwear with good tread is recommended as the wooden walkways are sometimes slippery.

Looking forward to this walk on Sunday. I've only been on two other meet ups.

Here's what I like about walking for fitness. The folks are honest every day folks who want to walk at a decent pace but not something that equates to a death march (you've all been on em..you show expecting a modest paced hike of maby 3mph and it immediately turns into a 4mph gait covering 7+ miles) I really appreciate that Marys husband attends. FWIW (and Mary will tell you I approached her on this) I was a bit concerned about possibly being the only male on the walks.

    1 · January 2, 2014

    • Mary D.

Rich, we like having a few men along to protect us if a grizzly bear jumps out of the woods LOL Seriously, if someone was to fall and sprain their ankle, you would be more able to carry that person back to the cars. Looking forward to seeing you again on Sunday.

      January 2, 2014

    • Pam K.

Rich, I'm going to try and get my husband to come too. He and I often walk in Steiglmeier park on summer evenings.

      January 2, 2014

  • Jennifer G.

I've been sick all week with a cold. I'm going to play it by ear & see how I feel Sunday morning Hope I can make it I hate being stuck in the house

    January 2, 2014

    • Mary D.

Feel better, Jennifer. I hope you wake up Sunday morming much improved. Look forward to seeing you again.

  • Kelly P.

Looking forward to meeting you! My husband is a little worried about me walking with strangers.

    January 2, 2014

    • Mary D.

Kelly, when I first joined Meetup, I admit that I was a bit nervous about strangers, but the members of this group are the nicest, most "normal" people you'll ever meet. The walks I've been on are mostly women and they are so friendly and interesting to talk to. I bring my husband along as a human GPS. LOL Tell your husband that you are completely safe with us. Have him come along if he's concerned. We're looking forward to meeting you too. See you Sunday!!!

      January 2, 2014

  • Pam K.

Kelly, let your husband know--I'm harmless! (LOL!) I work for the Erie Co. Dept. of Health and am a medical social worker for families who have children with long-term special health care needs. I'm looking forward to meeting new people who share my passion for the beauty of nature walks.

Bring your cameras...we saw lots of deer up close on our last Stiglmeier Park walk.
