Interested in learning how to do orienteering? Come to the Buffalo Orienteering Club's Learn and Practice event in Chestnut Ridge on May 17th.
Orienteering is a sport that can be done competitively or casually. It requires the use of a map and compass to find designated spots in the woods and/or park. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors!
The Learn & Practice event begins at 10:00am at shelter #29 on the Newton Rd. side of the park. Small groups will work with an instructor to learn how to do orienteering and then the instructor will take the group on a practice course to implement those newly learned skills. The fee is $10 for the first person in a group and $2 for each additional person. Children under 11 years old are free. Children also require a waiver form signed by a parent.
Following the Learn & Practice event there is a regular orienteering meet. If you attend the Learn & Practice that fee covers your entry fee into the meet. There are multiple courses of various difficulty levels. If you are just learning this is a great opportunity to see how you can do without your instructor.
If you already know how to do orienteering you can come just for the meet and skip the Learn & Practice session. The meet registration is from 10:30am until 11:45am. The fee structure is the same as listed above and the starting location is also shelter #29.
Additional information and the schedule of all Buffalo Orienteering Club meets can be found on the club website.
If multiple people from this meetup group attend everyone does not have to participate as one large group. Groups can be as few as two people who decide to participate together.
I will be at the meet working as a volunteer, so although I won't be leading members of this meetup group through the orienteering course I can serve as a contact person for questions and/or organize a meeting spot for those attending so they can easily participate togehter.
For those who decide to try orienteering for the first time I hope you enjoy it!
