Phleger Estate is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, with easiest access [including bathrooms and picnic tables] through Huddart Park in Woodside. $6 entrance fee.
The plan is to start from the Werder Picnic Shelter in Huddart Park, where there are three options. I've borrowed them from this site that you may want to look at for a detailed description.
a. 6.8 miles, about 500 feet elevation change.
b. 8.7 miles, 1400 feet elevation
c. 9.6 miles, 1400 feet elevation change
I'd like to do the 8.7 or 9.6, but may wimp out. At any rate, all of us would go for quite a while on the same route for the 6.8 mile hike, so we'll have plenty of time together.
There will be rest stops, a lunch stop, hike-at-your-own-pace/catch your breath stops. If you're a faster hiker you're welcome to zoom ahead. This is, for our group, an exploratory trip to this park, and the best source of information for you is from other websites.
Driving plan: a. Meet at Kathleen's house in Sunnyvale at 9:00
b. Meet at the Park and Ride just west or south of 280 at Page Mill Road about 9:20.
It seems advisable to have at least one car of people who prefer the shorter route, and another who is game for trying to make the whole loop. If you want to hike just along the creek at the beginning and then head for home, a nice side trip would be to stop at the Woodside Store Historical Site on Woodside Road. On the other hand, those who don't wish to hike as long could relax in Huddart Park with a good book or gentle walking.
Pack enough of the usual equipment to feel that you are running away from home. We want enough amenities to feel comfortable. I have an extra pair of hiking poles to offer for the day.More reading about the Phleger Estate,
