Announcing a new Meetup for Walking thru the Valley of Heart's Delight & Hiking Around!

What: San Juan Bautista: 10K walk and Living History Days

When: November 7,[masked]:00 AM

City Park -- San Juan Baustista
400 Second Street
San Juan Bautista, CA 95045

There's a Volksmarch this weekend in the lovely town of San Juan Bautista, just south of Gilroy. AVA's brochure says: "Come explore San Juan Bautista, a historic town which has escaped major development, by passed by 101 and Southern Pacific Railroad. It's an authentic relic to the development of the West through mission settlements and rich Mexican heritage. Walk route meanders all through town, through the historic cemetery and mission plaza. View the original El Camino Real (yes, a dirt road)

Fairly flat, with a short hill up to the cemetery. Uneven or non-existent sidewalks in spots. You can start the walk as early as 9:00 but bathrooms in city park do not open until 10; you can start at whatever time you wish but registration table closes at 4:00.

Pets OK with cleanup. Check out

Registration location: City Park, 400 Second Street between Jefferson St. and San Jose Street, San Juan Bautista, CA 945045. Take Hwy 101 South to exit 156 EAST to SJB. Travel 2 miles; take the Monterey St. turnoff to Mission. At stop sign proceed straight on Monterey St. with cemetery on your left. After a second stop sign, Fourth Street, continue two more streets; turn right. (Second Street sign is blocked by metal building on your left.) City Park is on your right in the third block. Parking available on all city streets."

After the walk, stay to enjoy Living History Days, with outdoor displays, bread baked in an outdoor oven, fresh tortillas, on and on....sarsaparilla and card games in the saloon. Park website indicates $3 charge; $4 to tour old mission church and grounds. Click here for more info on San Juan Bautista Living History Days.

Can carpool from Sunnyvale at 9:00, or spots south right off 101. Will be back in Sunnyvale by 4:30 at the latest.
