Snowshoeing GreatBrook in Carlisle

  • Jan 4, 2014 · 11:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Hi Everyone,

Jeff has been kind enough to lead this event, thank you Jeff.

He is asking us to get there a little earlier to start the walk at 11:00. Please arrive early to get yourself ready to go, especially if you need to rent shoes and figure out how they go on. I suggest you be there at 10:30 to rent and be ready. Also bring your license for an ID for rentals.

If you have your own snowshoes, you can RSVP YES for the wait list and I will open it up a few days before the meet up.

FOR THOSE of you who will not be attending on Saturday, please change your RSVP to a NO so that other people that are on the wait list can go. Jo Jo, we know your situation.

I just watched the weather and currently they are saying more snow coming Thursday, and very cold on Saturday so please dress warm enough.

If you are joining us at Fish Bones for lunch after please let Jeff or I know. This will be my first time snow shoeing and I am extremely excited to do this.

All in fun,

Mary

Sorry. I would have loved to have gone but I listened to a couple of weather reports and I think it will be too cold. The report said it will go up to around 25 in the afternoon but I know it is going to be pretty cold in the morning. Hopefully we can go another time. I love snowshoeing.

I really, really wanted to join you for the snowshoeing, but it is just to cold for me. I had my shoeshoes and clothes all set out, but when I saw the 2 degree temp I knew it was a not doable for me. Hope to see you soon.

Hi All, I may have a conflict with this event. My Auntie died yesterday and we are waiting to see what the arrangements are. Initially they were thinking Thursday or Friday, but with the snow storm coming, it may be Saturday. I will let you know ASAP. Also, if I can't make the snowshoeing, perhaps I can make lunch.

      Sorry for your loss Jo...

Thanks everyone for the wonderful thoughts and wishes for my Auntie Fran. She was such a lovely lady. You all would have loved her! She was about 4 ft 11 in but had a ton of energy! She could yodel like nobody's business. She loved the Red Sox in particular Dwight Evans. I remember taking her to a Sox game on her 75th birthday. Just she and I and we had a ball! She lived a long wonderful life! Due to storm Hercules, they moved her services to Monday so I can join you all tomorrow an snowshoeing. Looking forward to it!

Saturday looks to be beautiful. A few important notes below

    1) Address is 1018 Lowell St, Carlisle. Park at the cross country ski area which is directly on Lowell Street. DO NOT go down the road to the ice cream stand. Look for my red Nissan Xterra for the meeting location. 2) It is expected to be very cold. Please bring more warm layers than you think you need. Hats, Gloves, neck warmers, face masks, wool socks, etc are all appropriate. Avoid cotton wherever possible.

    3) As mentioned, I plan to start walking at 11:00. Please gather at that time prepared to leave. If you are running late, we will be starting across Lowell Street on the Acorn loop and following it counter clockwise (i.e. keep right at all intersections without going out on a road. There is a map showing the trails at http://www.mass.gov/eea/docs/dcr/parks/trails/greatbrook-winter.pdf

    See everyone then!

    Jeff

Good news! A trail fee is NOT required for snowshoeing. Great Brook has an extensive trail network that is open for free snowshoeing. The only cost will be rental equipment as necessary.

One note... Great Brook tells me that they only have 12 pairs of rental snowshoes. As there are currently 16 people signed up, this may be an issue. Linda and I have our own, so we won't need them, but I would hate for people to go and not be able to rent.

For those that need to rent snowshoes, some REI locations have them for rent. Here is a link to their site:http://www.rei.com/stores/rentals.html#Massachusetts

I am in for lunch at Fishbones also. I don't have snowshoes yet so am planning on renting. If I collapse on the side of the trail while shoeing just send in the rescue dogs for me. LOL!

I highly recommend getting gaiters if you don't have them. They wrap over your boots and pants to keep snow from going down into your boots. If the snow is at all deep it helps a lot. They also come in handy when you have to shovel the walk or any other activity where you might step into snowbanks. I also use them sometimes in other seasons if I think I will be hiking in mud or other slop.

    • Mary F.

      Thanks Jeff,

      December 19, 2013

Ok so Mary H has them That leaves 12 pairs for 12 people left so far.
