Float the Yakima River to Bateman Island...canoe, kayak, or raft!

As of Friday I have 31 folks signed up for this trip!  This will be quite the flotilla!

Schedule:

8:15 to 8:30...please arrive at the parking lot behind Denny's.  You may arrive early and have some delicious donuts over at Sputnut!  And perhaps some coffee.  I'll be there about 8am.

8:30 to 8:45...combine some loads and pickup passengers.

8:45...depart Denny's and head to Snively.

9:15 to 9:30...Unload the boats and passengers at Snively.

9:30... drive vehicles to Bateman Island (Wye Park).  I will call Jo and Erika to meet us at Bateman Island.

9:45...arrive at Bateman Island and drop off vehicles.  Part vehicles across the street from the Sageport Grill.  Lot's of space to park and it is only a couple hundred feet past Wye park.

9:50..load into Erika's and Jo's vehicles and drive to Snively.

10:15...launch fleet at Snively.

The schedule is a bit ambitious, but had to get something down on paper.  Please be on time.

Bring a hat, sun screen, lunch, something to drink.  I hear some folks are bringing beer...

To coordinate the logistics please meet by 8:30am in the parking lot behind Denny's restaurant at the corner of George Washington Way (GWW) and Williams Ave. in Richland.  GWW is the main road into Richland, you can't miss it off the highway.

Directions to Denny's:  When you enter Richland either from Pasco or the Kennewick you will see a "George Washington Way" exit.  Go down GWW for about a mile.  Off GWW make a left at Williams and make an immediate right turn into the parking lot.  You will see the Denny's Restaurant at the corner.  Pull into the parking lot behind Denny's on the Williams Ave. side.  Do not park in the Denny's parking lot.

At this point we can combine loads and carpool to Snively and get some of the vehicles to Bateman Island.  It would be best if we all meet by Denny's so as to  figure out where to place the vehicles.

If some of you would rather just go straight to Snively please be there by 9:15am.  I would like to launch by 10:15am.

Directions to Snively:  In Richland get back onto GWW and head North.  Make a Left onto Van Giesen St. (just past the Rite Aide Pharmacy).  This will take you through Richland across the by-pass highway into West Richland, just follow the signs.  You will drive through West Richland.  Watch your SPEED limit...they will get you!  Turn Right onto Grosscup Blvd.  At some point Grosscup Blvd. will veer to the right, but you will go straight onto N. Harrington Rd.  You will then turn Right onto Twin Bridges Rd, cross the Yakima River, twice, and turn Left onto Snively Rd.  Go down Snively Rd. till you see the Snively boat launch.

Directions to Wye Park:  From Richland you get back onto GWW and head South out of town.  You will get back onto hwy 240 headed to Kennewick.  Go about a mile or so and exit at Columbia Park Trail.  Take the traffic circle and head to your left, or East.  You only go about a mile or so.  You will see Wye park on your left.   We you park your vehicles it may be best to drive past the park a bit and park in a area just off the road.  It's a large gravel covered area across the street from the Sageport Grill and other businesses.  This area is about a couple hundred feet past Wye park.

All-in-all it was a great trip. Right after we launched we had one kayaker dump. I said to myself, "this could be a long day." But the intrepid soaked one was able to get ashore and right himself and launch again, albeit a bit wet. Another adventurous soul took a side channel and ended up in the cattales. Just as I was about to chalk it up as our first casualty, she emerged from the brush, a bit dazed, but alive. How soon they forget their training. We found a lovely spot to lunch under the West Richland bridge. Most of us made it. The current was a bit strong as Delle and the Dennis raft missed the turn. We waved as they sailed by...

We made it to the landing about 3pm. After securing the gear many of us visited Kimo's for a beer and a bite. Perfect end to a fine adventure. A beer never tasted so good!

I will be scouting out the Snake River for our next trip. The Snake is wider, deeper, and faster. It should be just as much fun!!

I just joined the Walla Walla hiking group, and this would be my first outing with them. Is there still room on the trip? I have my own kayak.

Great response for the Walla Walla crowd! You folks must be starved for things to do without any hikes planned! You might think about joining "Outdoor Adventures" over in Richland till the WW Hiking Club gets going again!

Hi Clark: I've got a buddy coming along probably, and we are likely to bring a canoe. Is your kayak inflatable? If not, we may need to travel separately to accommodate the equipment.

a definite maybe. Any thought about canoeing the Walla Walla River? Maybe paddle upstream and float back? From the little park/reserve by the highway 12 right turn to the tri-cities/walla walla

Sergio, I just RSVPed "yes" but I wanted to ask what class of water this stretch is. (My husband and I are fairly new to the area.) We have our own kayaks but would not be comfortable tackling above class 3 (VERY small rapids or riffles). And would it be OK to have our dogs in the kayaks with us? --Hap

This route only has meandering river. It is a super easy trip.. I will be bringing my open kayak and my dog (who still hates the river).
