For our August book club, we will be reading Pastoralia by George Saunders, an author who was named as one of the "20 Best American Fiction Writers Under 40" by The New Yorker.
Saunders has been compared to Mark Twain and Kurt Vonnegut - "a savage satirist with a sentimental streak." Whether he writes a gothic morality tale in which a male exotic dancer is haunted by his maiden aunt from beyond the grave, or about a self-help guru who tells his followers his mission is to discover who's been "crapping in your oatmeal," Saunders's stories are both indelibly strange and vividly real. Should make for a great discussion!
We will meet on Thursday, August 21 at 7:00 pm at Samantha's apartment in Wallingford. There is only room for 20 people, so please only RSVP if you plan on reading the book. If it's a nice day out, we can have the gathering outside in a picnic area at Samantha's apartment complex. The address and parking information will be emailed to those who RSVP within a day or two of the event.
There will be themed food and beverages, as well as games based on the short stories. If you can bring something to share, please mention it in the comments below.
Hope to see you there!
NOTE: In September, we will be reading a New York Times best seller. If you have any suggestions, please email Samantha at [masked].
