Superstition Wilderness Thru Hike (East of Apache Junction)

Description: This hike was cancelled last month due to hazardous weather. So, let’s try it again! If a little hiking is good… then a lot is better! Join us as we cross the Superstition wilderness. We will be splitting in to two groups and starting at opposite ends. Our hiking adventure will lie between the Tortilla trailhead and the JF Ranch trailhead. Along the way, the vegetation will change as we transition between the Western Supes’ Sonoran scrub and the Eastern Supes’ desert grasslands. This hike is a great way to see a lot of the Superstitions.
Difficulty: Difficult, Total Distance: 13.5 miles
Start Elevation: 2900 ft./3510 ft., Elevation Gain: 2270 ft./2890 ft.
Drive Time: 1.5 hours, Water to Bring: 4 liters
Meeting Time/Place: 6am Pyle Recreation Center
Estimated Return Time: 7:30pm
Leaders: Jeff, Duane
Minimum Attendees Required: 4
RSVP By: Thursday February 21, 10pm.
Special Instructions: Bring lunch and trail snacks. Also, bring a flashlight/headlamp just incase. Sections of trail may be overgrown. Plan to stop for dinner on the way back.

Jeff & Duane, that was such fun. Legs very sore today. I think that's the longest I've ever hiked in 1 day. Thanks for all your work in arranging the hike. And, Jeff, your definition of the "easy side" is waaaayyy different than mine. Good info to have. LOL

If anyone has a preference of which direction they want to hike, please let us know. We will try to accommodate you but in the end, the group sizes should be even.

      I'll do the harder one.

No preference, just put with a group that has a member who knows where the heck she/he is going b/c I sure have no idea.

Here are some considerations for after the hike: Both vehicles will have a small cooler to store victory beverages. You may want to bring a change of shoes, shirt, etc… in a small duffle. Finally, we will meet at the Dirtwater Springs Restaurant in A.J to regroup and refuel.

Since there is so much water in the Supes now, Duane and I will bring water filters on the hike. That way everyone can carry a little less water and refill if needed. I would still recommend bringing enough water for 10 miles though as the middle part of the hike will be up on a ridge away from the creeks.

Yes! This hike is finally going to happen. The weather is looking good though we will probably encounter patches of snow on the ground. There are now 8 of us attending which means only two vehicles will be needed. Duane and I will drive. Help with the driving will not be needed after all but thanks for the offers.

I'm looking forward to the hike on Saturday. I wanted to share with others ... when I asked Jeff if this would be a good hike to which to bring hiking poles, he said yes. With this recent snow and now water run-off, I bet hiking poles will be a big help negotiating puddles or surprise creeks. See you Saturday morning.

The access road to the JF trailhead requires high clearance vehicles. Duane will be driving his. Does anyone else have a high clearance vehicle and would be willing to drive? Or, does anyone else know how to drive a stick shift that could drive my Xterra to that trailhead? If so, the number of attendees can be increased. Thanks.

Hi Jeff, Bill & I don't have a high-clearance vehicle, but we both drive stick. Bill's from England and that's about all they have there. We're looking forward to it! -Delisse

OK, Jeff, I need to update this comment. Bill is hurt! Darnit. But I'm still coming. And I still know how to drive a stick shift if that helps. See you 6 am at Pyle.

Scheduling conflict so I'll have to back out.

I opened up the limit as we now have a couple of solutions (thank you for the offers to help) to access the JF trailhead. We will still need a couple of volunteers to drive to the Tortilla trailhead. This trailhead is passenger car accessible.

Like our attempt last month, the plan is to split into 2 groups and start on opposite ends. Duane will be leading team north starting at the JF trailhead. I will be leading team south starting at the Tortilla trailhead. We will pass about half way and when finished we will drive each other’s vehicles out. The southbound hike will be a little more strenuous because of the greater elevation gain.
