Woods Canyon Lake Trail - Hike and Picnic (East of Payson)

Description: A trail all the way around Woods Canyon Lake is a wonderful way to spend a day hiking. The trail is well-marked and takes the hiker through beautiful vegetation including ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, Gambel oak, bracken fern, and wild rose. The trail is often along the shoreline. Begin the hike by crossing the dam near Spillway Campground and then follow the water's edge. The trail joins the Rocky Point Nature Trail. Birdwatchers will find plenty to see and other wildlife, including beavers, live in or near the lake. Potluck Picnic: Join us after the hike for a potluck picnic in the Rocky Point Picnic Area. I will bring one 2 burner propane stove. Please note what you plan to contribute to the picnic: appetizer, main entree, side dish, dessert. After the Picnic lunch, I plan on staying near the lake to relax...pick your carpool mates accordingly to when you would like to leave.

Difficulty: Easy, Total Distance: 5 miles

Start Elevation: 7500 ft, Elevation Gain: Little to no elevation gain
Drive Time: 2 hours, Water to Bring: 2 liters

I just got home…stayed until Monday evening. We finally got rained on today at about 2:30PM while kayaking on the lake. Nice hike - enjoyed the tree falling too. Thanks everyone for coming. It was great meeting all the new people and seeing all the 'old' people too. Hope to hike with you guys soon! :)

What a nice day. Hike was super. Cookout was even better. Sorry I left my backpack and pole on back of Craig's truck. Oh well. Such is life. Again, thanks so much for a wonderful outing.

This event is still on! If you have a tart or easy up shade - you can bring in case of rain. 40% chance of rain after 11AM. Bring rain gear too!

If you are meeting up at the Lake - look for a green car (Honda CRV) with a good-looking red kayak on top. That will be me!

My wife and I are spending Friday night in Payson. We are planning on her food shopping while I am hiking. She will then surprise us with some goodies when we finish the hike.

I'll bring a desert if I'm able to make it. I was thinking about a pineapple rum cake. If that's alright with everyone.
